When Bob Weir joined Kingfish, the Dead had just quit touring in Oct '74. Weir and Matt Kelly had met again when Weir produced David Rea's Slewfoot album. Kelly had since sat in with the Dead (on Wake Of The Flood), Garcia and the New Riders. Weir debuted with Kingfish in La Honda on Nov 8 '74 >3/3

I enquired into the tangled Santa Cruz Mountains roots of Kingfish, starting with a 1973 "jam band" called Lonesome Janet, and going backwards from there. Kelly's Menlo School friend Tim Hovey, with his own backstory, was his partner. Kingfish debuted as a quartet on June 7, 1974 >2/3

In November 1974, Bob Weir asked to join Kingfish, the band of his old school friend Matt Kelly. Almost no one had heard of Kingfish, even though it featured ex-New Rider Dave Torbert. But Kelly and Weir went back to their junior high football team >1/3

On August 21 & 22 '70, SF's Family Dog on The Great Highway packed it in. The phones had been cut off, but still Quicksilver headlined the weekend.
There had been great bands, in a jam palace by the sea, but the dream of music at The Edge Of The Western World was finally done.

On August 14, 15 & 16 1970, SF's Family Dog on The Great Highway booked its next-to-last weekend, with It's A Beautiful Day and Elvin Bishop. Opening was Sawbuck, with Ronnie Montrose. The venue's end was near.

On April 21 '72 Berkeley's Earth Quake headlined their regular Friday night gig. Opening was The Modern Lovers, recording unsuccessfully in LA, playing perhaps their first West Coast show. Someone had the foresight to record it (released '98)

Berkeley's Long Branch only held 350, but they could sell a lot of beer. There were a lot of bands. Asleep At The Wheel played most Tuesday nights, long before Austin. The Doobies played one night (Feb 12 '72) and The Tubes opened on a Sunday (June 4)
Elvin Bishop, Commander Cody and Tower Of Power played on their way up, and Big Brother on their way down.

On the weekend of July 31, August 1 & 2 1970, SF's Family Dog on The Great Highway was headlined by The Youngbloods. The Dog was failing, but The Youngbloods were at the high water mark of their career, riding high on the re-release of "Get Together."
"Get Together" had been released in '67, but was used for a Public Service Announcement in mid-69, so the single was re-released. It went to #5. The Youngbloods got a new record contract out of it.

On the weekend of July 24 & 25 1970, SF's failing Family Dog on The Great Highway put on three bands connected to ex-Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane manager Matthew Katz: Phananganang, Tripsichord Music Box and Indian Puddin & Pipe. Details are non-existent.

There are still undiscovered countries in 60s rock history. Lake Tahoe, CA, 4 hours from SF, had a thriving rock scene in the Summer of 67. #GratefulDead, #JimiHendrix, Buffalo Springfield and others all played there. I enquire about this lost paradise.

Terry Reid was a hugely talented singer and guitarist. He had opened for the #RollingStones on some dates of their '69 US Tour. Reid is most famous for having turned down Jimmy Page's offer to be lead singer of #LedZeppelin (he recommended Plant, though)

On July 14 & 15 1970, in mid-week, SF's nearly closed Family Dog on The Great Highway booked the great Terry Reid. #DavidLindley led his band. Cat Mother and @AceOfCupsBand were there, too. Why? Why a Tuesday and Wednesday? Great music, strange doings
Terry Reid's touring schedule during this period is very murky, so it's hard to draw a conclusion

On Thursday, July 2 '70, The Family Dog promoted @TheKinks at a suburban Concord HS (@YgnacioValley). The Kinks, 1970, on tour, in deep Contra Costa Cty, at a high school--imagine. We know the show took place, but little else.
The Kinks and been booked to play Hawaii but got cxl'd. Instead they played two weeknights at SF's Family Dog and then at a suburban High School.

On June 30 and July 1 '70, the near-dormant Family Dog on The Great Highway booked no less than England's great The Kinks. Touring behind the Arthur lp, some Hawaii gigs were canceled and they booked the Dog instead.
Nothing is known of these shows. The "Lola" single had been released in the UK, but not yet in the States (where it was released in late July). If the Kinks played it, it would have been unknown to the crowd.

On June 19, 20 & 21 1970, SF's Family Dog on The Great Highway had its last gasp as a "regular" venue, booking the Flying Burrito Brothers for a weekend. The Burritos were a quartet (GP had been fired) and no trace remains of the show.
The Rhythm Dukes (w Bill Champlin and Jerry Miller) and Cat Mother (now relocated to the Bay Area) were also on the bill.

By Summer 1970 SF's Family Dog on The Great Highway was a failing concern, but it still got rented. On Wed June 17 '70 Michael Bloomfield and The Marin Music Band headlined a benefit for a drug treatment program.
Good music, probably, but likely not a big draw. Bloomfield was a guitar genius, but he didn't believe in rehearsal.

On October 5, 1968, #GratefulDead played Sacramento. Pigpen probably wasn't there. Bob Segarini, lead singer of the opening Family Tree, had known the band since Fillmore days. Segarini was invited by #JerryGarcia to join the Dead. He declined.
