Roger David Casement (Ruairí Dáithí Mac Easmainn) was born on 1 September 1864 in Dublin. He worked for the British Foreign Office as a diplomat, becoming known as a humanitarian activist, and later as a poet and Easter Rising leader. Roger Casement (Ruairí Dáithí Mac Easmainn) was executed by the British on 3 August 1916. He worked for the British Foreign Office as a diplomat, becoming known as a humanitarian activist, and later as a poet and a leader of the Easter Rising. He was honoured in 1905 for the Casement Report on the Congo and knighted in 1911 for his investigations of human rights abuses in the rubber industry in Peru.

The Easter Rising planned for 22 April 1916 (Easter Saturday) was postponed for two days. The capture of Roger Casement and the scuttling of the Aud which was transporting an estimated 20,000 rifles were some of the reasons for the delay.

I made a trip out to Dun Laoghaire again on Sunday, this time to capture the Snow Moon rise behind the bronze statue of Roger Casement, by Mark Richards FRSS.

At one stage the moon disappeared briefly behind low-lying cloud, and when it re-emerged the sky had turned beautiful shades of pastel pink & blue, just as the sun was setting. It was an amazing sight…I’m glad I was there to witness it.
