Roger Ebert (1942–2013) died 10 years ago today.
This is how I'll always remember him.
Finally, here's #RogerEbert's last review: Terrence Malick's To the Wonder. It's not just well-written but spiritual, humanistic, and has the sense of a man who, shortly before death, understands life, especially the lonely bits.

Second is #RogerEbert's scathing and hilarious review of Wild Wild West: https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/wild-wild-west-1999
Here are three reviews of #RogerEbert's I love. First, his mixed and perplexed review for David Cronenberg's 1992 film Naked Lunch: https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/naked-lunch-1992
If you are grieving, this piece may give you comfort and hope:

I didn’t always agree with #RogerEbert’s reviews, but they were almost always thoughtful and he looked at filmmakers’ intentions and if they were successful in achieving them. He took films for what they were. Ebert didn’t think that everything had to be “high art” in order to be good. When he loved a #film he was effusive in praise, and when he hated one, his words could cut like a knife.
On the anniversary of #RogerEbert’s death, I wanted to share this video of him responding to a white #film critic at the Sundance premiere of Justin Lin’s “Better Luck Tomorrow.” The critic scolded Lin for portraying Asian Americans negatively and this was Ebert’s response. #Diversity in film shouldn’t just perpetuate stereotypes - positive or negative. It’s allowing minorities to be shown as full people. Ebert got that and championed it.
Also ... when #RogerEbert was wrong, he was *really* wrong--his review of TARGETS completely and utterly misses the point: https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/targets-1968

Zitat #RogerEbert: "To make money on a rock opera attacking those who would make money on a rock opera: that was the brave moral stand taken by Tommy."

Still thinking about Aftersun, several days on from seeing it. What at first appears to be a modest slice-of-life story turns out to be a profound meditation on memory, love and loss. It brings to mind this quote by Roger Ebert: “The movies are like a machine that generates empathy… That, to me, is the most noble thing that good movies can do.” #Aftersun #RogerEbert #movies

I was just reading some movie reviews. Missing Ebert. He died in 2013, it's going to be ten years already.

It took me till 2022 to see this one. It's a true masterpiece and one of a kind! (but then again, aren't masterpieces always unique?)...
Here's Roger Ebert's view on the film with #burtlancaster - one of his finest performances, no doubt.
Also, #janicerule and #kimhunter are perfectly cast.

TIL that when Roger Ebert was near the end of his life, Rob Schneider, who Ebert had savaged in a review, sent him a sincerely-meant bouquet of flowers and personal note. *sniff*

(Read the linked review, too. It's hilarious. Ebert was always great at tearing apart bad movies.)
