Spending the day by the woodstove, in Covid-recovery mode, with this exceedingly good book by Steve Edwards, published in 2010 by U of Nebraska Press imprint Bison Books. A beautifully, carefully written account of his time as a caretaker of a backcountry cabin in the Pacific Northwest. Full of heart and wildness and deep empathetic insight into the worlds around and within us.

After completing a 40-mile hike and float down the Rogue River in May, I did some post-trip reading. The first book was "The Klamath Knot-Explorations of Myth and Evolution" by David Rains Wallace. Okay, but a little dated. The second was "Rogue River Journal-A Winter Alone" by John Daniel. Great book, highly recommend. First roll of film through Pentax K-1000 in 1983….got lucky.

Not often I get a chance to recreate a photo after 33 years have elapsed…but a couple years ago, I did…along the Upper #RogueRiver above Prospect, OR.

The view was better in 1984(ish) B/W when the few scant trees present on the cut-bank were saplings…but recently we’re 50’ tall or more.

What always impressed me was the immensity of the #pyroclastic flows that created the exposure, likely filling a paleo valley to a few hundred feet depth.
