Day 24 COMPLEX/SIMPLE

Complex: While Shadowrun is up there, for #RPGaDay2023 I'm gonna go with #Rolemaster. Specifically playing Rolemaster with all of the splat books. Everyone with their own kind of weird magic, embracing the strangeness.

Simple: Having now run a few #OSE games, I understand why #BXDnD is popular as a chassis for various #OSR clones. I had fun hacking it and making it my own game. Coming from DnD5e both groups of players through TotSK got used to the procedures quickly.

Day 16: WISH

I'd seen the #MERP books in hobby stores as a fledgling #ttrpg gamer in the 80's, but I didn't understand why folks raved about it until I played #Rolemaster in the 90's. MERP is (sorta) Rolemaster-Lite in a good way. Plus the lore and art of the books is incredible.

I'd say my wish would be three-fold. All of the MERP books (lightly 'table-worn' is fine), a group of friends excited to play/run it, and time to do so. Oh, and shelf space to store said treasure. #RPGaDay2023

#RPGaDay2023 Day 7: Smartest #RPG you’ve played.

That’s a strange question. They’re all pretty smart in their own way. If it’s talking about complex, then it would have to be #Rolemaster. If it’s talking about clever mechanics, then I’d go with #WFRP1e (the whole career system is still great in my opinion). Finally, if it’s using smart to mean nicely presented, that would be #Deadlands (specifically the #SWADE edition). #TTRPG

Has anyone used online RPG assistants to run games with remote players?

As I got older and my friends got families and moved away, it's been more difficult to find the time - both to prepare *and* play.

I'm wondering if online tools make it easier to get a sustained, regular campaign running?

I recently rediscovered all my old Hârn game setting stuff and decided to tweek it to mesh with ICE's Rolemaster Standard System rules.

Just finished adapting the Hârnic Shek-pvar magic system over. It works a little different, but I am happy with the results.

Woo! Got my RoleMaster Unified Core Law book!

Surprisingly thick & heavy, they went for the good paper. Not entirely convinced by the binding, but we'll see.

The chargen sample's art was so bad, and it was hard to judge in the PDF, but most of the book's art is acceptable to good (the Reaver). Layout's amateurish but gets the job done. Font ranges from generous in most body, to nearly flyspeck.

Now I just need Spell Law and C&T. And players with a lot of patience.

I’d like to highlight some of the adventures written by my dearly departed friend Crow (previously Tim Taylor).

The Orgillian Horror starts out as a standard haunted house setting, inviting the players in through the passing of “Uncle Tytus” and the surprise inheritance of his manor. (among other possible hooks)

Many deadly haunts await the players, but there is a second half that delves into Lovecraftian mysteries and mind-feeding terrors in an Old-Ones deserted base.

I used to play Role Master back in the 80s and see they've updated but still use lots of tables and charts. It would be great if they'd make system modules for #VTTs. It's a great system but automating it in #Foundry or #Roll20 could only make it better. But they've gone with their own (very) limited software system. With so many different gaming systems popping up every day they aren't special enough for that approach to work. #Rolemaster, #ttrpg

@mclang I mostly run my own systems, which are rules-light-ish, or Swords & Wizardry (had a brief affair with Basic Fantasy), but I'm waiting for RoleMaster Unified to get finished & all in print, maybe this year! And then I'll probably run it again. Been some time since I ran RMClassic, and RMFRP before that. There's also Against the DarkMaster & LightMaster, Zweihänder, Legend, & OpenQuest for more D100-likes, but I miss the originals.

Watching a RoleMaster actual-play, GM takes a break to explain Resistance Rolls, with level vs level table ripped off from RuneQuest.

Which is interesting/weird, I played starting in… '81? for Arms Law, '85? for full RM2. I basically never used the original RR table. Probably from some RoCo, but my method was always to treat it as a Static Maneuver with some skill rank bonus - attack skill rank bonus, 101+ succeeds.

Total waste of a table to me.

Any of my Twitter chums interested in 12 books / 4.5kg of #Rolemaster goodness? I scratched my RM itch last year and with a bunch of Ars Magica incoming, I need the space.

They're listed at £25+ each on ebay but doubt if they ever sell at that. So figuring somewhere in the region of £10 per book is reasonable?

Talk me out of buying #Rolemaster Core Law. It's a living fossil of a system. It's extremely unlikely I could ever get anyone to play it. But I really loved Rolemaster back in the day.

This is not a RoleMaster problem, but the way it's being run. My RM games were always fast, other than combat rounds taking an average of 45 seconds per character (I did science on it!)
