#Portuguese and #Romanian are geographically the most distant of the major Romance languages, so it is only normal that they have had developed in different ways. The following image highlights a few of the many words which, in spite of sharing the same origin in Classical or Vulgar Latin, have evolved and acquired distinct meanings in Portuguese and Romanian.

"How exactly did we get from Latin to the many Romance languages of today? What changes happened to Latin that it should end up looking so different?"

Mastering one of the #Romancelanguages will certainly speed up the process of learning another language of the same family but you will find some stumbling blocks along the way: changes in pronunciation, false friends, varying usage both in prepositions and in the subjunctive mood, as well as diverging grammatical gender of many similar words as shown in the following chart.

I really love languages and especially (because I've studied some of them) romance or neo latin languages. We know about or learn some of the most known romance languages like French, Italian or Spanish and Portuguese. But there are others too! Like Catalan, Romanian, Sardinian, Romansh or Ladin e.g. Very beautiful languages: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_languages #romancelanguages #NeoLatin #languages #study

I figure now's a good time for my #introduction:
I am a young #translator based in Madrid who's dabbled in biomedical, technical and audiovisual translation as well as #localization. I enjoy learning about the world, its history, its natural and technological wonders, and its #languages. I am also deeply invested in class politics. I speak Spanish natively, English proficiently, and I am... okay? at French, Catalan and Galician. #Romancelanguages are my jam. May subject you to random fun facts.

#Romancelanguages are considered "easy" for #English speakers until they meet something called " #subjunctive " .

Sure, #scholarlycommunication should be free; free as in beer, and free as in speech.
But that is not enough. #Science should be free, free as in the air we breathe.
Incidentally, in #Finnish #language the root for the word for "free of charge" is nothing like the #English "librated from burdening", nor like the #RomanceLanguages ''praise, favor" (gratis/gratuite) , nor like the #German "cost-loose" (kostenloses).
No, the Finnish word is 'ilmainen' and the root for that is... Air.
