Madonna of the Seven Moons is a 1945 British Gainsborough melodrama but melodrama is hardly an adequate word to describe this truly bizarre film. It's beyond mere melodrama. Over-the-top, outrageously excessive, a delight from start to finish.

Sissi (1955), the most famous and most successful entry in the German heimatfilm genre. If you’re in the mood for a lightweight feelgood fluffy romance with a fairytale vibe then this is just what you’re looking for.
It made Romy Schneider a star and she's adorable.

Futures Vedettes AKA School for Love AKA Sweet Sixteen (1955) is an early Brigitte Bardot romantic melodrama co-written by Roger Vadim. There are a few comic touches but it’s always romance that takes centre stage. It can also be seen as a coming-of-age movie.
The main reason for seeing this movie today is of course Bardot. but it's a pretty good movie.

Arabian Nights (1942), Universal’s first epic made using the three-strip Technicolor process.
It has the charm of an adventure B-picture but it looks very impressive. It’s quite content to provide spectacle and harmless entertainment. And there's plenty of romance.
With Maria Montez as a dancing girl who wants to be a queen.

The Blue Angel (1930), the first Josef von Sternberg movie to star Marlene Dietrich.
Made in Germany with both the English and the much superior German language versions being shot simultaneously.
Dietrich is extraordinary as Lola Lola, a surprisingly complex and ambiguous femme fatale.
A true cinematic masterpiece.

Sea Wife, one of those odd little movies that just doesn’t get made today. Not easy to categorise this 1957 British film - a very unconventional romance, a war thriller and an adventure film.
Sea Wife (Joan Collins) and Biscuit (Richard Burton) are stuck on a raft together, and then on an island, after their ship sinks. A strange love develops.
Quirky but fascinating.

The Female Animal was Hedy Lamarr’s last movie. Not at all a bad way for her career to end. She has a really juicy part and she makes the most of it.
Hedy plays a fading movie stars who acquires a new toy boy (played by George Nader). This causes problems with her (Jane Powell).
A very entertaining noirish grown-up sex melodrama and Lamarr is terrific.

Butterfield 8 is a much more interesting and much better movie than its reputation would suggest.
One of the problems is that Butterfield 8 really is trashy. It’s an overheated sweaty sex melodrama. I happen to like overheated sweaty sex melodramas.
It dates from a period when Hollywood was tentatively exploring the idea of making movies for grown-ups.

Born Reckless is an unassuming little 1958 rodeo musical melodrama B-picture that is thoroughly enjoyable mostly due to its star, the wonderful Mamie van Doren.
She plays a cute singer and cowgirl.
There’s a touch of subtlety to the characterisations that you really don’t expect in a B-movie, and there’s a nice atmosphere of creeping defeat and melancholy.

First Love (1939), a reworking of Cinderella and one of Deanna Durbin's biggest hits.
Very much a feelgood movie. It’s funny and clever and it’s ridiculously romantic. It follows the Cinderella story surprisingly closely and does so with wit and style.
And of course she sings.

Guy Hamilton's Manuela (US title Stowaway Girl), an odd little 1957 British film. An unconventional romance and maritime adventure drama combined. With a great cast headed by Trevor Howard, Donald Pleasence and Elsa Martinelli.
A crusty but kindly middle-aged sea captain falls in love with a beautiful girl stowaway. Insanely romantic and quirky.

Lady of the Tropics (1939) pairs two of the most gorgeous stars of the era, Robert Taylor and Hedy Lamarr. It’s a love story with an exotic setting and it has the further advantage of the famous MGM gloss.
This deliciously overheated 1939 romantic melodrama isn’t generally all that highly thought of but it's actually very very enjoyable.
