The details of a #lost #RomanoBritish #landscape at Holbeach Drove Common, Lincs. are so well-preserved that one can imagine walking through it. There's a wide drove, curving from upper L to upper R, with a subsidiary lane leading upwards from it and regular & irregular fields & paddocks on either side.
The dark lines are ditches, gradually filled with accumulating seasonal compost from grass & weeds. Don't they show up beautifully against the light ploughsoils of the silt fens 😊.

It's amazing to see such extensive ancient #landscapes. In this aerial view, the low banks on the hill nearest & more distant hills are the boundaries of #prehistoric (probably Iron Age) #fields, created up to 3,000 years ago & farmed for at least 1,000 years into the Roman period. Marked at A, top R, is the #RomanoBritish #settlement on Upavon Down - the field #archaeologists evocatively describe how 'it's possible to walk through the streets of one settlement, into the next settlement.' #bliss
