Today I'm listening to the first eponymous album from the #Romantics. I first hear the Romantics on an EP in the early 80s called Midwest Pop Explosion along with the Singles, Nickki and the Corvettes and some power pop solo work by Stic Bators. I immediately loved their take on power pop.

Thomas Chatterton became an accomplished poet & managed to die in literary, opium-fogged poverty all by the age of just 17. While walking with a friend in St Pancras Old Churchyard, he fell into an open grave. His friend, helping him out, joked about assisting in the resurrection of his genius. A slight #GothHunt tangent today: after they returned from Switzerland #shelley and Mary Godwin (as she still was) lived in #Bath for a while; while Mary appears to have lived at the Abbey Churchyard apartment she addressed her letters from 12 New Bond Street. Shelley's poem Ozymandias was likely influenced by the adventurer, explorer
& archaeologist Giovanni Belzoni bringing part of a broken statue of Ramesses II from Egypt to London. Though only part of the head & part of the torso remained, the statue weighed 7 tons & was moved with tremendous difficulty. A pastel study by one of the great Romantic painters, for his later work "The Death of Sardanapalus," of which Sister Wendy Beckett said she found of exquisite technique but nauseating subject matter.She represents one of the king's concubines, being killed by soldiers as their city falls to invaders.

The Funeral of Shelley, by Louis Edouard Fournier. Shelley - having drowned in a boating accident & washed up on an Italian beach - had to be cremated on the beach due to quarantine rules. The painting contains a few inaccuracies. Byron left early by - bizarrely - sprinting into the waves & swimming out to sea. Mary Shelley - pictured kneeling - didn't actually attend. In 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell', #WilliamBlake subverts standard religious notions. Hell is depicted as a place of unbounded, fiery creativity. One tumultuous night in my youth I was unable to make it home. So I set off with my sleeping bag into a national park and slept by the sea. In the morning I woke to the most dazzling landscape that just swallowed and obliterated me as I waded naked into the ocean for a cold swim. It was an extraordinary experience that has left me annoyed when people use beauty as an anodyne replacement for "pretty".

Years later a friend told me there was a word for that experience, the way the Romantics used the word sublime.
