We did a mini distro to test out our new recipe. Spanish Needle (also known as Romerillo and Blackjack) is in full bloom right now in South Florida. While capitalism would rather kill it as a weed, it’s actually a superfood!

It formed the base for a three bean soup (garbanzo, lentils, and black) and was wonderful. We didn’t intend to distro, but we had so much left over that we liberated some coffee cups from 7/11 and gave out 7 meals. And now we have a recipe plan for Saturday!

We spoke with folx who saw the police sweep the encampments near 7 Ave and 17 St in Overtown. “They’re killing people, and now they want to ship us off to some island” said one, referring to the now defunct plan to build a “sanctioned encampment” on Virginia Key. “Ya they come by, we never know when” said another. This juxtaposition of cruelty and commonality is the same that we’ve heard for the last year. Miami’s war against houseless folx continues.

We won’t speculate whether or not the mutual aid group that was distributing food — with a permit — about 2 miles directly north of the sweep were aware of the sweep. Police like to sweep when there are the fewest number of people at the encampments, such as during a food distribution in the area. This is why we encourage all to never ask for permission!
