Would he be ready to actively support #directdemocracy and shoot himself in the foot? I think not.

#RoryStewart’s entire lecture is based on the premise that the late 80s early 90s was an age of #hope and moral legitimacy, when really, it was #greed, wasn’t it? I am not sure I am interesting in returning to what was never hope in the first place. I believe kids nowadays (#fridays4future etc…) are much more savvy then he’ll ever be: not cynical as he suggests, but realistically hopeful

#RoryStewart is talking about people stuck in the old world, yet he uses #Liveaid & #ComicRelief’s decline as a measure of moral dereliction because “they don’t draw the interest they used to”. How about people are more aware that #internationaldevelopment is an enabler of #colonialism & exploitation?

Interesting how #RoryStewart is throwing #DavidCameron under the bus in his #GreshamCollege lecture about #populism, accusing him of having been stuck in the Old World and being unable to adapt, while totally being blind to his own role in the #Tory party.

There used to be some decent ones - wrong-headed, sure but #johnMajor #roryStewart #theresaMay and others were at least honest

Even on the #right they were not #corrupt like their modern equivalents - I can't see #enochPowell being sacked for #corruption (moral corruption, sure - but not putting his hand in the till.....)

@ruthpozuelo Really interesting, thank you for this video. One of the presenters of #TheRestIsPolitics podcast, the politician #RoryStewart, said on the show last week that he had asked it a question about Croatia's success in playing football. It gave a long answer but lacked specifics. When he asked it the same question about Spain, it gave the exact same answer. He described it as a 'classic bluffer', which sounds right.

Interestingly that is not reflected on the Right - there is no sense of moral superiority I can detect amongst #extremeRight - they may well attack #centreRight (or I guess nowadays we should say the #notSoExtremeRight given johnson evicted #roryStewart types from the #kipperTory party)

I do not see #farage for example making out #sunak - or even in her time #may as somehow evil - yet some on the #farLeft seem to want to spit bile on any #centreLeft #labour supporters

Listening to Rest is Politics talking about ageing population. Apparently when the old age pension was introduced, there were 12 working people for every retired person, and now that figure is 2.5.

Controversial opinion: we should not be afraid of raising the statutory retirement age as life expectancy increases. In exchange, the state should commit to ensuring life expectancy is neither a postcode or demographic lottery.
