As we head into a new school year, and for many of us in many faiths a new year and new beginning, a reminder of the transcendent power of love seems à propos. I've just put the final touches on my new 1st-year course “In Relation: Identity, Inheritance, Survival, Love." We're reading Beloved, The Marrow Thieves, Frankenstein, and The Best We Could Do. The sonnet is what I want the class to take away from these texts. 1/2 #roshhashanah

2/ SO - this year, we will gather together in community to revisit some of the profound themes of these holy days - such as what is being birthed within us on the day of the world's birth, and what forgiveness really means in the context of Judaism. (It is quite different than how our dominant culture imagines forgiveness.)

Each teaching will involve contemplative and soulful text study and poetry that speaks to our themes, as well as discussion and music.

We will be joined by my dear colleague, Cantor Fran Chalin, and for Kol Nidre, cellists Mary Artmann and Monica Scott. (We will be streaming live from our living room on Kol Nidre!)

It discusses opposing 'weltanschauung' of the two schools, and uses it to explain numerous other arguments between them in the #mishnah. #TuBeShvat

Explainer:

This inverts #PublicSchool districts that make the design of the #academic #calendar seem like an #inclusive process by offering the option of days off on #minorities' major #holidays, but then we get outvoted for extra days off around #Christian holidays like #Christmas/#Easter.

Elul 29 is the day before #RoshHashanah.
Tevet 13 is December 25.
Tevet 20 is January 1.
Adar II 19 is March 29 (Good Friday, which is a day off in many public schools).

The easiest solution seems to be to show your #love and #respect for your #relative by sending her #greetings when you send them to the rest of the #family, at secular holidays like #RoshHashanah.
