There is no trial date that would be the right date. The window between rushed and too late is microscopic. So I think no one should care what Ross Douthat thinks about it.

@JonChevreau #RossDouthat had a good column about the indictments of Mr. Trump in the #NYTimes last week: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/14/opinion/trump-indictments.html
"But this whistle-blower’s mere existence is evidence of a fascinating shift in public U.F.O. discourse. There may not be alien spacecraft, but there is clearly now a faction within the national security complex that wants Americans to think there might be alien spacecraft, to give these stories credence rather than dismissal."

"But once the establishment went all-in on Covid restrictions, he swung all the way the other way, elevating not just criticism of shutdowns and vaccine mandates but the full anti-vaccine case."

#RossDouthat in the #NYTimes :
"In the era of populism there is a lively debate about when a democracy ceases to be liberal. But the advance of euthanasia presents a different question: What if a society remains liberal but ceases to be civilized? The rules of civilization necessarily include gray areas. It is not barbaric for the law to acknowledge hard choices in end-of-life care, about when to withdraw life support or how aggressively to manage agonizing pain."

The survey indicates:
* Inflation, economy and immigration are the top issues
* Rs are seen as focused on those issues
* Ds are seen as focused on Jan 6th, women's rights, and the environment
* Abortion makes 40% of voters more likely to vote D, 37% more likely to vote R.
This is not the idea I get of #uspol from the media.
This is from a column lamenting the modern world, and claiming there is no way back.

"The new liturgy was supposed to make the faithful more engaged with the Mass; instead, the faithful began sleeping in on Sunday and giving up Catholicism for Lent. The church lost much of Europe to secularism and much of Latin America to Pentecostalism — very different contexts and challengers, yet strikingly similar results."

"The speech’s warning against eroding democratic norms [...] was immediately succeeded by the news that Democrats would be pouring millions in advertising into New Hampshire’s Republican Senate primary, in the hopes of making sure that the Trumpiest candidate wins — the latest example of liberal strategists deliberately elevating figures their party and president officially consider an existential threat to the Republic."

"And then along with these failures came an absurd ideological spectacle, in which health officials agonized about how to state the obvious — that monkeypox at present is primarily a threat to men who have sex with men — and whether to do anything to publicly discourage certain Dionysian festivities associated with Pride Month. [...] This, too, has repeated Covidian failures."
"If Covid-19 probably would have overwhelmed even the most effective public-health bureaucracy, monkeypox — which as of now is mostly spread through close human
contact, especially sexual contact, and for which we already have a vaccine — offered a chance to replay the Covid outbreak at a milder degree of difficulty. Yet the same kinds of bureaucratic failure were repeated — too little testing early on, too little interagency coordination, too little preparation"
"[T]he C.D.C. has been consistently behind — behind evolving scientific knowledge, behind the curve of Covid’s evolution, behind how most Americans have already adapted. As my colleague Emily Anthes put it, gently, the new guidelines “effectively acknowledge the way many Americans have been navigating the pandemic for some time.”"
