I can't tell if it's the way Andy Serkis is reading Denethor or Tolkien's writing in #RotK, but it feels to me that neither of them are as good as John Noble's take on the character (which, despite grossness, still has a lot of grandeur and romance), or as good as my idealized idea of Denethor -- as a true heir of the Numenorians, brave, far-seeing, noble and wise, but whose far-seeing-ness has turned his wisdom to worry, his bravery to despair, and his nobleness into a desire for a fitting end.
Today, March 25, the One Ring is destroyed in the fires of Mt. Doom.
"The fourteenth of the New Year," said Gandalf; "or if you like, the eighth day of April in the Shire-reckoning. But in Gondor the New Year will always now begin upon the twenty-fifth of March when Sauron fell"

I'll always feel bad for the oliphants in Return of the King in the same way I feel bad for the rancor in Return of the Jedi.
They're not inherently evil - in fact, they're probably naturally quite gentle (for the most part), but they've been mistreated and forced to do the lousy bidding of evil jerks, and wind up dying painful, unnecessary deaths.

1 film left in the annual rewatch. I chose the extended editions this year (all available on @hbomax@twitter.com), 11+ hours of #LOTR. Now comes the 4+ hour #ROTK and the Siege of Gondor that I've been reading about thanks to @BretDevereaux@twitter.com https://acoup.blog/2019/05/10/collections-the-siege-of-gondor/
My youngest is finally a good age to introduce to the #LOTR movies. Normally, we'd do a marathon on 12/25, but Fellowship has "L"s & 12/25 is #NoLDay (no ell), so we're watching it, after dinner, today, & will watch 2 Towers & #ROTK on No "L" day.
(our winter seasonal holiday is a few days earlier)
