Bonus Photo of the Day 31st March 2023 (June 6, 1996): G-MURY, Robinson R44 Astro, at a rather damp Woodford Air Show, 6th June 1998, after it’s round the world flight with Jennifer Murray at the controls, the first piston-powered helicopter to complete a circumnavigation, and the first woman to fly a helicopter around the world.

🧵 1/Taste of Persia
For the final book in the current focus on #RoundTheWorld , I thought it was a book on Persian food. Instead, it is focused on Persia and its neighbouring countries - a collection of regions that aren't often represented in cookbooks (yet).
Taste of Persia: A Cook's Travels Through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, and Kurdistan, by Naomi Duguid
Published: 2016
Pages: 401
Publisher: Workman
There are 155 recipes, 104 of which are meat- and egg- free, but comprise all sorts of recipes. There is NO focus on vegetarian dishes or even vegetable dishes without a meat component. Pretty sad, even for 2016.

🧵 1/Saffron Tales
The next cookbook in the #RoundTheWorld series is the first of 2 today focusing on Persian food. Honestly, another of the great cuisines of the world.
The Saffron Tales: Recipes from the Persian Kitchen, by Yasmin Khan
Yasmin is the author of other books from the Turkey, Cyprus and Greece (Ripe Figs) and Palestine (Zaitoun). Prior to working in food, Khan was a human rights campaigner running national and international campaigns for NGOS and grassroots groups on poverty and human rights.
Published: 2016
Pages: 240
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Price: around $28AU, but check around as prices vary
There are 84 recipes, 46 of which are egg- and meat- free, but include jams, breads, dips, salads etc. There few vegetarian main dishes.
The recipes were collected as Yasmin travelled the country, visiting home cooks and kitchens

🧵 1/Saka Saka: Adventures in African Cooking: South of the Sahara
The first book today in the #RoundTheWorld orientation theme is one of the most joyous and colourful books around.
Saka Saka: Adventures in African Cooking: South of the Sahara, by Anto Cogagne and Aline Princet
Published: 2022
Publisher: Murdock Books
Pages: 208
72 recipes, 26 of which are meat- and egg- free, and only 2 or 3 of those are a substantial dish.
I am rather disappointed by this - there used to be a vegetarian restaurant with food from the same region, so presumably veg meals are available there. Do you remember the restaurant? Eons ago in Adelaide (North Adelaide then Prospect). I ate there often.

🧵 1/Shetland: Cooking on the Edge of the World
A final book for today (but more to come in the #RoundTheWorld books I have at the moment.
It's another really interesting book with a UK-orientation:
Shetland: Cooking on the Edge of the World, by James and Tom Morton
Published in 2018
280 pages
Around $45AU for hardcover version
It's not indexed on EYB so I don't have recipe counts. Suffice to say that the ratio of egg- and meat- free recipes is low from this island where seafood is plentiful, native sheep roam freely and traditions that go back hundreds of years are followed.
But anyone who loves/loved the landscapes in the series called Shetland will probably love this book.

Finding photos from a trip from a lifetime ago - before social media took over and when backpacking meant living out of a backpack, guided by a book and occasionally checking in at home from internet cafes, drifting through the weeks and not continuously posting every location and moment. In a way a trip I have very few photos from but oh so many memories #photos #backpacking #roundtheworld
