Hopefully all attending the #RSS2023Conf are getting a chance to enjoy the sunny weather in Harrogate and aren't just stuck inside all day.
Sad not to be there this year.
In previous years I would be filling followers timelines on twitter with posts from the conference.

Next was an insightful discussion with @albertocairo on data #visualization, how designers think, and more at the #RoyalStatisticalSociety https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htUWWVzYTUI (9/10)

First was an excellent event on understanding non-survey data quality at the #RoyalStatisticalSociety. There are lots of good talks here on the systematic differences between digital trace data and #surveys, although the focus on #Twitter (this is from September) is likely to be less relevant moving forward. I particularly liked the talk by @floriankeusch on using data donation to collect digital trace data https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOga14ICT5E (2/5)

It was great to be able to talk to the #YoungStatisticians section of the #RoyalStatisticalSociety #RSS today, giving tips on how to plan and deliver a great rapid fire talk.
My slides (including edits from audience) are here: https://dtoher.github.io/YSS_talk/
Key points:
1. Remember your primary audience
2. Have 1 key message
3. Don't overload with info / detail
4. Use it to advertise rather than explain
5. Prepare, script & rehearse
6. Don't use anything that needs your own laptop (takes too long)

First was an excellent slate of talks on panel conditioning in longitudinal #survey #data by Ruben Bach, Fabienne Kraemer, and @floriankeusch at the #RoyalStatisticalSociety. As participants experience data collection through multiple rounds, it can change their attitudes and behaviors leading to biased estimates, and the important work presented here explores this phenomenon. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQ6G9MPJkW4 (2/8) #statistics

First was an incredible event on #data #ethics and governance at the #RoyalStatisticalSociety. The entire event is worth your time, but the talk by John Pullinger on a new social contract for data was exceptional. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OWWi1lYv2k (2/8) #AIEthics

Next was a fascinating talk by Ioannis Kaloskampis on using shipping #data for real time economic activity analysis at the #RoyalStatisticalSociety. I suspect a lot of folks in investment banking are already doing this, but the detailed description of how to calculate these indicators was incredible, and indicates how alternative metrics can provide more timely, accurate metrics than traditional econ stats. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwqDDwsjnpM (6/12) #economics

First was a short talk by Peter Foster on anomaly detection in streamed #data at the #RoyalStatisticalSociety. This is an extremely common problem, and I like the simplicity and effectiveness of the approach shown here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpaKprU2Law (2/9) #ML #stats

Next was a short talk by Renyuan Xu on simulating tail risk scenarios with an eye to supplementing model training data at the #RoyalStatisticalSociety. I get very jumpy about relying on simulation when one doesn't have adequate data to begin with (see all of the recent literature on the #ML reproducibility crisis), but at least this approach tries to capture some of the inherent weirdness of the real world https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqMvYoc5nwU (5/6) #simulation #MachineLearning

Last was an interesting talk from Maggie Chen on the behavioral fingerprints of #Bitcoin traders at the #RoyalStatisticalSociety. The very public nature of Bitcoin means that researchers can much more clearly study these transactions and compare them to other types of investments, and this is a whirlwind tour of the dynamics of this market and those who trade in it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu9xWnx-xjg (6/6)

Last was a short #RoyalStatisticalSociety event on medical decision making with Maria Ibrahim, Deborah Ashby, and Andrew Vickers. Folks in #tech should take notes from these presentations, they are a master class in thinking about not just modeling but also how to present useful predictions. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw29Ta5MWbY (3/3) #AI #HCI
