Holly Beach.

This is a scene from Holly Beach, Louisiana, on the Gulf of Mexico. The birds are various gulls and terns.

Terns fly over the waters of the Gulf of Mexico in search of their prey. When they spot the prey they make a sharp dive into the water. This Royal Tern is just resurfacing after its dive. Doesn't appear to have been successful this time.

It's your tern.

Back at the beach there are forester's terns in the foreground and out of focus royal terns in the background.

"Forster's and Black Terns breed near each other in marshes. The young, downy chicks can wander away from the nest, and sometimes a parent feeds a young bird of the wrong species." allaboutbirds.org

Got a spotting scope and the zoom capability is a game-changer. Even having forgot my tripod and camera adapter, the pictures came out pretty well.

Royal Tern

This tern was far away, so the photo doesn't have the detail I would like. It does capture how sleek and streamlined the bird looks in the air.

" large tern, slender and long winged. The head is fairly large and often has a ragged crest at the back. Royal Terns have a substantial body, a long, forked tail, and short legs. The bill is long and daggerlike." - allaboutbirds.org
