#RPAdmin: I have decided that I will be Limiting federation with the new social.bbc server on retro.pizza. This is based on feedback from users here and in the wider Fediverse who are from the UK and are familiar with how much harm they've done to the transgender community there.
"Limit" makes posts from accounts at this domain invisible to anyone who isn't following them. You will still be able to follow accounts from there.
Considering if I should go ahead and toss up a Limit on the new BBC server. They're not likely to be a source of active harassment and some of their information will be valuable but also they've got a bad habit of platforming transphobic and otherwise fascist voices. Open to feedback! #RPAdmin
I think the one feature that might be worth moving the server from masto.host to a more direct, hands-on server setup is the DeepL API Translate feature. #RPAdmin
#RPAdmin: I've posted a new State of the Pizza blog post for July! Sorry about skipping June, there were so many kittens. ðŸ˜
(It's posted to our Patreon but you don't need to be a Patron to read it!)
#RPAdmin: Just a reminder, pizza folks, please use Content Warnings on political/news posts about upsetting current events. This lets people affected by them take a break from constantly having to hear about how terrible everything is if they need one.
#RPAdmin: Having issues again -- I am sad to say that I was not able to upload a cat photo just now. But our web host is working on it:
#RPAdmin: Masto.host has confirmed they were once again having trouble with OVH tonight but it looks to be stable again:
Quick #RPAdmin thought:
As we're getting a bunch of new folks both here on retro.pizza and in the Fediverse as a whole, I'm considering removing limits on some of the big mainstream servers to make it easy for new people to find each other. My only concern is that more people in the Fediverse as a whole might mean those servers are likely seeing higher levels of, frankly, Reply Guy assholes. Thoughts? Lower the limits and see how it goes or just play it safe?
#RPAdmin: FYI, thanks to our generous community chipping in via Patreon, retro.pizza is on a hosting plan they gives us plenty of room for sudden growth spurts, so we are absolutely open to new people! Invite your friends over! I should be able to get new accounts approved pretty quick.
What's happening to Star Trek: Prodigy -- along with so many other shows -- is why I will never have a blanket rule against piracy on retro.pizza. I have a rule against promoting piracy of things that are directly supporting their creators (indie games, in-print books, etc), but piracy is increasingly necessary for preservation. #RPAdmin
It wasn't just you, our host was having problems this morning, but they've got it sorted now. #RPAdmin
We've had a bunch of new user signups on retro.pizza this week and that's very cool. :blobcat_party: :pixel_pizza: #RPAdmin
#RPAdmin: Read May's State of the Pizza over on Patreon! You don't have to be a Patron to read the server admin blog, but contributing even a little is the best way to help support this community and keep the hosting overlords happy!
#RPAdmin: Much like yesterday's issue from another server, today's spam surge is coming from techhub.social, which I already had on Limited for being cool with users who use "soy drinker" unironically, so we are pre-saved. I'm trying to be stingy at handing out Suspends, but generous with Limits for servers that seem to draw in Reply Guy types who might harass our folks, and there seems to be an overlap with the latter and places vulnerable to these spambots.
Ugh, they seem to be dealing with them as they're reported, but I'm waking up to 20 reports from different folks over the course of two hours about crypto scam spam coming from mastodon.social so it might be time to put them on Limit for a bit. Let me get some coffee in me first... #RPAdmin
The big Masto admin discourse this week is apparently fundraising posts, so... I mean, yeah I allow fundraising posts, I couldn't foster as many cats as I do if I didn't have people sending me donations for food and supplies. I would ask that people don't use their accounts exclusively for fundraising -- be part of the community you're asking for help from -- but if you're doing that, you're probably going to have more luck on a bigger server anyway. #RPAdmin
#RPAdmin: Had a bunch of new people join the server yesterday! Welcome welcome welcome, and if you're totally new to Mastodon, I recommend checking out @feditips for some advice! The most important thing here: use hashtags liberally! Yeah, it was cringe and attention-seeking on Twitter, but here it's how we find the people talking about what we want to talk about!
#RPAdmin: Finally got to write my State of the Pizza blog post for April! https://www.patreon.com/posts/state-of-pizza-81717519
#RPAdmin: It's a good feeling to go through the FediBlock tag from the last couple days and find that most of the reported bad actors have already been suspended here. Staying on top of things!
Though I'm getting a lot of spam reports for the big dot social lately. They're handling them, but I worry they're too attractive to spammers not to silence for a bit again. Thoughts?
#RPAdmin: Saw another admin doing this so I'll state it for myself: No admin antics for April Fool's Day on retro.pizza. Any bad handheld game takes I post on April 1 will be completely sincere. Also I'm not going to do anything distressing like announce we're closing down as a joke. Nobody needs that stress.
