If I wanted to run a single program in an #immutable #VM that discards its state on terminating (ideally with the program image on disk being read-only), what would you suggest?

#Unikernel systems seem like an option, possibly.

The idea would be to run an untrusted program inside the VM operate on arbitrary third-party input, convert it into a sanitized/safer format and spit it back out over #RPC to be handled in a program where failure on the simpler format is safe.

@Reiddragon @ezio Yeah, the #QubesOS approach is a compromise and technically an implementation detail (there's an ongoing project of decoupling the isolation & #RPC communication interfaces from any specific isolation implementation like #Xen).

In the long term you should (one day™) be able to use its interfaces to manage isolation some arbitrary microkernel (e.g.: https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/3894, though blocked for reasons in the comments).

@libreleah @to3k As for alternatives with VMs outside of Qubes, the main issue I've seen is that all of the neat secure #RPC integrations they've added will need to be redone from scratch by you, the user.

GUI isolation in most other VM solutions also tends to be somewhat complex, which might impact security (#Xpra is not developed as a security tool).

A lot of #GUI frameworks don't include anything for accessibility and even for those that do, how pleasant it is to use varies wildly.
