Full overview of the 13th Age adventure I'm writing is done. I call it an overview but it's kind of like a first basic draft with no mechanics and light on details like GM instructions or descriptions. It's about 3700 words, so not like a couple of paragraphs.

Now I can start breaking it down into scenes, name characters, and get to writing it properly. A much longer task, but one made easier by the depths that the overview goes into.

I almost never think in "pages;" it's a bit alien to me. I've always thought in wordcount. In Hammondal I've imposed certain rules on how the book can be, which require me to think in "pages" now and then, and it wigs me out a little. I think the result will be worth it, but it's one of like 40 things about this book that are outside the ol' comfort zone. 😅

When I write about Reuben, Hammondal's slightly-infamous sentient sandwich, I get sincerely misty and heart-heavy, which, for better or worse, warns you about the kind of game writer I am 😅

I would love to post more about negative lessons in game design, but when I do, I have to abstract them, because every work I regard as a mediocrity (maybe 99.85% of all RPG books of all eras) is someone else's beloved favorite, and there's no benefit the resulting bad feelings.

So I do this lopsided thing where I celebrate the books that teach me positive lessons and go silent on the rest 😅 But, both kinds of lesson are hugely valuable.

One of my favorite GMs in recent years has aphantasia (he doesn't visualize, has no "mind's eye," or mind's ear, or any other kind of, as he calls it, hallucination powers). He's also an excellent player.

I feel like it's had a subtle, but definite, influence on my RPG writing. No real impact on design, but I'm a lot more conscious of when I'm leaning _heavily_ on the presumption that the reader, GM, or player will be visualizing something.

A writing exercise that began as a joke: I took a fairly innocuous location entry from the Hammondal draft, and _rewrote_ it four times, each in a style imitating _other_ books about fantasy towns, two that I admire, and two that I don't.

I'm frightened of doing it again but, if you're writing anything right now and need a stimulating excuse to waste a few hundred words, I recommend it 😁

I try not to do this too often, but I am looking for and work. I do , , , , and for bisexuality and autism. I will and adult material (Yes, I will help you find typos in your smut ;)). I do not work on projects that are openly bigoted, PUA material, or fan fiction.
