How has my experiment to not use RPMFusion been going?
It seems I solved all of my codec problems by just using the Flathub Firefox package. Since they bundle in everything I need, including the codecs, I got no issues playing YouTube videos, which was the main road block I would hit before.
For my use case, I can manage without RPMFusion! Still not great that I have to go to something outside of the Fedora Projects to solve that problem. #Fedora #rpmfusion #linux

> If you are feeling adventurous and want a good challenge for your experience, you can choose Fedora or Arch Linux.
Please explain why you think #Fedora is more challenging than #Ubuntu? Because you need #rpmfusion for proprietary drivers?
I don't usually use copr, but there's also #rpmfusion. It tends to have most things I want to use, and if it doesn't, I just try to build from source.

Hey
(1) #fedora 38 users
that use
(2) mesa-freeworld from #rpmfusion
and
(3) have updates-testing enabled.
Video apps might crash for you due to a version mismatch; if you want to fix it, grab the updated package from here:
https://koji.rpmfusion.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=25790
Hopefully it soon will make it to the rpmfusion repos.

When I've installed Fedora, there were three scary terminal things I had to install or enable: my ROG RGB utility, Flathub, and RPMFusion. I got the utility, and Flathub can now easily be enabled as a third party repo, so that leaves RPMFusion.
This is my experiment not only with Silverblue and immutable systems, but also without RPMFusion. I want to see if I even need RPMFusion.

I blogged: http://thorstenl.blogspot.com/2023/04/how-would-you-change-fedora-is-you-were.html
"If some magic wizard would make me #Fedora's supreme ruler, I'd morph the release model into one similar to that of #Firefox or the Linux kernel. I'd also dramatically increase relations to #RPMFusion, so that we together can finally make things easy and robust that Fedora itself can't or doesn't want to provide. And of course: immutable operating systems FTW!"
Which #linux packaging format do you prefer?
My choice is usually #rpm but in some cases I prefer #Flatpak because of #flatseal that makes app permissions easy to manage. And many apps are only available as a Flatpak (or the rpm doesn't work well like the Kdenlive rpm from #rpmfusion lol) #appimage is also pretty decent with #appimagelauncher installed.
But I avoid #snap at all cost because #snapstore is proprietary.

@vortitu Without Nvidia GPU, #Fedora would easily be my choice. Simply easy-to-use and hassle-free out of the box. Day is gone for me to try out every distro. Now I need stability to work.
With Nvidia, I have no idea. #RPMFusion was not as smooth a ride I'd like. Always have to wait out a bit for Fedora upgrades until RPMFusion catches up.
I had relatively better experience with Nvidia on #Ubuntu. Haven't used #Mint but I guess it would probably inherit that.

did the 'mesa-va-drivers-freeworld' and 'mesa-vdpau-drivers-freeworld' packages get removed from the #rpmfusion repos in #fedora for #GPU acceleration? ..if so, what's the current fix?
A #question for the #fedora community:
What happens to repos, such as #RPMFusion on a distro upgrade. Say I have enabled to repo with Fedora 36, installed software from it and now moved to 37.
@Darkasvim Excellent choice! I highly recommend enabling the #RPMfusion repos:

#Fedora Workstation ships with #Gnome. Then you have different Spins that offer #KDE and #Xfce to name a couple.

Most will want to enable #RPMFusion after install which is a community contributed repo that provides additional packages (both free and non free) that Fedora can't include by default for various reasons. Especially codecs and for amd gpu vaapi, h264,h265 and vc1 IIRC but:

@gandalf_the_blue @ondrejbudai Not for the initial setup. It's similar to how you have access to some Fedora flatpaks on a fresh install but still need to enable #Flathub as a repo. Flathub at least comes with instructions that are close to what the average person might think of as installing. With #rpmfusion it's all in the command line.
But I hope I'm wrong about that!
#fedora
@ondrejbudai The need for the average person to probably have to use #rpmfusion makes it hard for me to recommend #fedora to a non-techie. :/ Too much terminal for most people.
The #mesa VA/VDPAU drivers for #Fedora #Linux are back via #RPMFusion. Here's how to enable them, assuming you already have RPMFusion enabled:
sudo dnf swap mesa-va-drivers mesa-va-drivers-freeworld
sudo dnf swap mesa-vdpau-drivers mesa-vdpau-drivers-freeworld
