Pfizer just announced trial results demonstrating maternal RSV vaccine passes antibodies on to the fetus via the placental circulation, with "nearly 82% efficacy against severe infection in the first 3 months after birth and almost 70% over the first 6 months." Similarly, only 3 days after that announcement the European Commission okayed an antibody preparation called nirsevimab which can be directly injected into newborns, with preliminary evidence this might be protective for all kiddos, not just high-risk newborns. Typically babies receive vitamin K [helps prevent bleeding] in first hour of life, + a vaccine against hepatitis B virus [HBV] before discharge from the hospital. Some context here — the U.S. is not the 'greatest country in the world' in terms of infant mortality, instead we rank 51st internationally, largely because of gross inequalities in access to maternal + infant care.
