Howdy everyone, we are W5AC, the Texas A&M Amateur Radio Club. Our history dates back to at least 1912 with the callsigns 5AC and 5XB at what was then the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas.

In the past, we have done an early play by play coverage of a football game in 1921, chess matches with N5XU in Austin, and long telegrams with our Model 19 teletype on #rtty

Currently, our members are interested in #hf, #vhf, #digital, and many more topics.

@ve3qbz Well the default for amateur radio #RTTY is 45 baud, 170 Hz shift. These days most everyone one runs "normal" and USB. I don't know HDR, but usually on a waterfall you see two tones and you just tune to them. In the old days you used an LED bar or crossed scope to tune, but it's easier on modern programs.

Software Defined Radio.
Its thumbish sized USB stick that you put an antenna in one end and USB connector on the other.
Form there the RF waves are at your command.

A BUNCH of mine are #RTTY between ~2002 and 2012 or so & a smaller bunch now are #FT8. I think this is why my QSL rate is higher than many. A little higher, too, if you subtract the ~400 that will never match that I uploaded w/wrong cert because I didn't read the directions. :-)

Do you think we've had enough closed, irreproducible, proprietary digital modes contaminating the #hamradio hobby (#ROS, #VARA, #DMR, #YSF, #DSTAR, etc.)? Well, now we've got #LORA for #APRS.

No: ham radio should be based on open, free standards. There are plenty of free, open, well documented digital modes (#FT8, #JS9, #WSPR, #M17, #PSK, #Olivia, #RTTY) in addition to the oldest-ever digital mode (#CW). Please support ways of operation everyone can inspect, modify, or build a radio around.

I think the #CHOWG meant that "clubs that use digital are dead to me" ... not the same. Orrrr ... maybe those other clubs *pretend* to appear dead so that he goes away ... 😃

I've been operating as #W1AW/2 that last couple of days using #SSB (40M, 20M, 10M)

At 2:00 - 4:00 UTC, I'll be operating again but using #RTTY somewhere between 7.080 MHz and 7.100 MHz (probably 7.085 or so).

Conditions have improved significantly over the last couple of hours do if you want to give a shout or try RTTY, you know where I'll be.

@N4JAW I've been doing #RTTY for ever & so was all set up, but it wasn't until a local ham decided to relay some near-live astronomy imagery over #SSTV on the local repeater from a star party back in Jan '19 that I *finally* did something that wasn't RTTY (used MMSSTV in place of MMTTY, come to think of it) ... & that got me going on #FT8 ... & I managed WAS on 30-m FT8 in the next 30 days. Been pretty hooked ever since! 😜

RTTY is way more fun than FT8 for me RTTY is friendly, polite and even in contests you get this moment when someone replies with your name, 73 and some nice greetings to the north. Love it. I guess one day rtty will save the world. I'd like to have one of those Teletype readers. Do they make sense these days? Probably not. #rtty #hamradio

Also das mit dem #rtty freut mich nun wirklich und ja - als Neuling, es ist die schönere Art miteinander zu kommunizieren verglichen zu FT8. Looks like no joy on #10m #RTTY today.

I was able to work 2 DXpeditions (3B7M and J8NY) this weekend on #17m using FT8's Fox and Hound mode - a first for me. I heard 3B7M on #SSB but never got through.

Also, for another victory, I also had 2 #RTTY QSOs on #10m - one of which was with a station trying it it for the first time. I'd like to see the mode used more and I think it has much potential for #DX people aren't considering.
