So unterhaltsam, lustig und gewitzt ich auch #RubenÖstlund‘s Kapitalismus-Satire #TriangleOfSadness auch fand, der Film offenbart einen zutiefst zynischen Blick auf die scheinbar unveränderlichen ökonomischen Zustände der Menschheit und stellt seine Protagonisten lediglich als Raubtiere ihrer selbst da. Ein unterhaltsamer cineastischer Stinkefinger.

Formally less vigorous, Force Majeure is a departure for #RubenÖstlund. Gone are the static long takes & distant wideshots, a la Roy Andersson & it only focuses on one family & their immediate contacts in a luxury ski resort. Östlund takes a crack at that concept of indisputable masculinity. During their ski trip, an avalanche comes down to where Tomas & his perfect white Swedish family are having breakfast on the balcony. In a blinding panic, Tomas flees the scene, leaving horrified family behind. But it turns out that the avalanche didn't reach where they were, just blowing some snow over them. Tomas comes back, as if nothing has happened. But for his family, their inner peace is shattered, forever. So how does Tomas reclaim his masculinity & show his family that assurance? Do we admit that we are all scared shitless little boy inside, despite our manly exterior? Not that his other films are laugh out loud comedies, but I find Force Majeure more disturbing than funny. #forcemajeure

Just like Involuntary, his previous film, Play is a constant cringe fest. It's uncomfortable because Östlund puts up a mirror on our polite selves. He refuses to show the black kids in better light. "Society made them that way," would be a way too simple explanation. They act violent and obnoxious because they can get away with it. They are playing the stereotypical role that white privileged folks put on them. They taunt on white folks' appropriation of 'black' culture as wide-ranging as from dreadlocks to Lion King themed school dance. Ordinary Swedish citizens don't know how to deal with them other than look down at their feet or call law on them. They don't know how to interact face to face with these peeps. Funny but pointed and not all the way successful, Play, just like Seidl's Paradise Trilogy, is an interesting film that needs to be seen widely and being discussed further. #play #rubenostlund #swedishcinema #film

Every once in a while, a film comes by that, although highly regarded by others, rubs me the wrong way. With Triangle of Sadness, a satire-of-sorts about social class from Swedish director Ruben Östlund, it isn’t the film’s message that bothered me (I’m all for taking the rich down a peg and exposing the lengths others will go to in order to curry favour with them or to move up in the pecking order). Instead, it is just too facile, obvious, and trying hard to shock or provoke. And I just didn’t find the (black) comedy very funny.
