Something new.
This is a ruby-crowned kinglet, a new bird for me. Like the house finch a posted a few minutes ago, this bird was at the top of the same tree on the same day. So, it took some work to get a halfway decent picture out of the small noisy original. But here it is.
"A tiny bird seemingly overflowing with energy, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet forages almost frantically through lower branches of shrubs and trees. Its habit of constantly flicking its wings is a key identification clue. Smaller than a warbler or chickadee, this plain green-gray bird has a white eye ring and a white bar on the wing. Alas, the male’s brilliant ruby crown patch usually stays hidden—your best chance to see it is to find an excited male singing in spring or summer." - allaboutbirds.org

This sound remains a keystone memory from growing up in Anchorage: long June days amid muskeg and spruce, filled with a song moving from high wiry repeated notes, gathering itself in a quick low earnest trilling, mounting into a clear carol - Liberty! Liberty! - audible a quarter mile away. All that originating in a bird the length of my finger!

Plumage a greenish-gray that melts into the background of moss and foliage, broken up by pale wingbars. One can see dozens over the course of weeks and never spot the male's brilliant crown, sleeked low and hidden under the duller feathers. But if raised, the scarlet strikes the eye boldly, even from far across a lush dim ravine.
