4k UHD release from of 's "La casa sperduta nel parco" ("The House on the Edge of the Park," 1980). I was previously lukewarm on this, but it feels like a filmic hand grenade for the present day, w/its tightly-focused misanthropy.

As am extreme cinema fan I'm saddened by the death of Ruggero Deodato. The brilliant touches of Cannibal Holocaust made it more than just a shocking movie.

I've never really forgiven for the animal killings in Cannibal Holocaust and avoided the film for years but he essentially invented found footage horror and there's a scene near the end that's exceptional and still shocking.

He also made the House on the Edge of the Park, one of the few films that genuinely deserved to be on the BBFC's video nasty list. It leans heavily on the original Last House on the Left and, if anything, is more disturbing.

Just learning that passed. Very, very recently I finally saw and can only say that you must be a little crazy to end up watching (imagine creating!) that stuff. I felt dirty, and I have lingering mixed feelings.

Still, RIP. The timing coincidence is strange.

I once persuaded a vanilla corporate publication run by two very nervous men who were in awe of my writing talent into hiring me for an essay on cannibal films. And I'm proud of the fact that I not only prominently featured CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST in the piece, but that I was paid fairly well for it.

Whilst his career spanned a wide-range of genres from peplum to poliziottesco and gialli, he will undoubtedly always be best remembered for his - in particular two of the most notorious "Video Nasties", House on the Edge of the Park and the endlessly contentious, yet undeniably influential, Cannibal Holocaust (both 1980).

If you’re making a movie in the poliziotteschi genre could you come up with a better title than Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man? This 1976 movie was directed by Ruggero Deodato.

It's fast and furious, incredibly stylish and very entertaining.

The opening motorcycle chase is justly famous but it’s just one of the amazing action set-pieces. The quarry shoot-out is inspired.

Planet of the Vampires (1965). Bava's sci-fi horror epic.

The Girl from Rio (1969). Jess Franco's lighthearted romp based on Sax Rohmer's lady diabolical criminal mastermind Sumuru.

Night of the Sorcerers (1974). A wild ride through the jungle.

Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (1976). My favourite of the poliziotteschi genre.
