So, I have been considering names for a Void Linux Mobile distro. As I normally do, I was making theoretical logos for names to get a good sense of if they sound good. I think I am in love.

Making the designs for the initramfs of a Void Mobile distribution is super fun. I can play with ideas that I've had while working on postmarketOS but could never implement.

I am running because it uses instead of .

I firmly believe we only need one kernel running at the same time.

@alxlg @starbreaker "systemd sucks" is not a joke, it's contextually snarky .... is a fine solution to easing server complexity and making life easier for administrators and app developers....but it's awful for embedded systems for example ... You don't want systemd running on your router... Complexity is an enemy to security... sucks is also not a joke ...I personally never liked convoluted interfaces

Well so far playing around with on an old laptop I've up and running along with all my other stuff. I've built from source without issue and just setup printing / scanning . Using for services is a doddle too no cumbersome . Could :void: be about to replace on my daily ?
I think I need more time just to make sure that it's really for me but the results so far are in favour of Void.

Using Void Linux is like trying to bake a potato using olive oil in the freezer.

In fairness to Arch, there was an archnosh package for it made some years ago and put into one of its repositories. I seem to recall and having similar levels of support.

van Smoorenburg was never the thing to compare to. They realized this in the big Debian Hoo-Hah over systemd in ~2014, and almost everyone ruled it out as a reasonable option.

Mewburn rc pre-dated systemd by about a decade and a comparison to it would have ruined the whole "but-but-but look at the long shell scripts!" argument.

So too did comparison to the family:

Mewburn rc still uses PID files, a mechanism that people knew to be broken back in the middle 1980s. daemontools-family systems like runit do not.

There's no universal agreement on what a "service" is as opposed to a dæmon. But the concrete differences between the systems start with PID files, and continue with chain loading, logging, and composition.

Is it your first encounter with a daemontools-family system?

@f4grx @VoidLinux not Void as they also provide a version of their distro compiled with instead of . And systemd won't compile with so @VoidLinux chose as init system for both, the glibc and musllibc builds.

I've definitely talked about it enough... I think I've definitely, maybe, probably decided to replace Arch with Artix on my laptop.

systemd has been extra buggy for me the last couple months with lid switch + suspend/hibernate issues, the refactoring of the backlight code... It's time to try something else.

Now I just need to decide between s6 and runit...

"US nears new cooperation deals with Pacific Island nations"

US continues to dismiss responsibility for radiological contamination from testing H-bombs in the Marshall Islands, or any obligation for remediation.

"Many on the Marshall Islands believe a U.S. settlement of $150 million agreed to in the 1980s fell well short of addressing the nuclear legacy. But the U.S. position has remained static for more than 20 years, the last time the compact came up for renegotiation.

Various estimates put the true cost of the damage at about $3 billion, including for repairs to a massive nuclear waste facility known as the Cactus Dome which environmentalists say is leaking toxic waste into the ocean.

The U.S. Department of Energy says the dome contains over 100,000 cubic yards (76,000 cubic meters) of radioactively contaminated soil and debris but the structure isn’t in any immediate danger of failing."

So I go to install (an old favorite of mine) and it works. Try installing guix on there and it complains about not speaking .

I set everything up manually and relax.

And then the screen locks.

I click on the password field to unlock the screen, and it selects the filler text. The "enter your password here" ghost text. I can't type anything there. TAB passes right over it.

"US military atomic cleanup crews were sent out in the wake of American nuclear testing, and many paid a heavy price, veterans say"

Business Insider: shrtm.nu/nAsE

"Ken Brownell, who was a carpenter when he served in the military in the late 1970s, was sent to the Marshall Islands in 1977 to build a base camp for hundreds of soldiers assigned to cleanup operations. These cleanup efforts involved a concrete dome that was built on Island, one of 40 islands that make up Atoll, which was used to deposit soil and debris contaminated by radiation.

The goal, Brownell said, was supposedly to make the area habitable again for the Marshallese people after all the testing that happened during the US occupation.

But despite the US military's efforts to clean up the islands, Brownell said there was one, massive problem — it just couldn't be done"

instead of arguing over whichever init system is better, just get rid of it. "init" is british and why would you want to make linux british? what the hell is wrong with you?

@TheHolyTachanka Because of your prompting (and totally not because I borked my Arch install), I tossed @VoidLinux back on the machine.

I... okay... is not what I remember, or maybe not what I expected. ln -s /etc/sv/service /var/service just makes things magically work and... I like that.

is likely to get the most votes in your poll. I voted for , but would have voted for if it was an option. You could still choose Devuan as it is but with a different init system. I use as my init scheme. Void also using runit.

Whatever you choose, enjoy it. And let us know how it goes for you.
