This is an interesting read from Foreign Affairs magazine setting the current situation in Russia in it's historical context:

"Russia’s New Time of Troubles - It’s Not 1917 in Moscow—It’s 1604"

, 28 April 1730 OS*, Anna Ivanovna is crowned the Empress of the Russian Empire.

Anna was picked by the Privy Council as the next ruler as she was widowed and childless. The council imposed a set of Conditions through which they would control her. She literally tore them up, and continued her uncle Peter the Great’s modernisation.

Like many Russian rulers, men and women, she could be cruel and abuse her power.

I did an article a while back on the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. I'm still dumbfounded that so much of the world misunderstands Putin, what he wants and how he thinks. The key to understanding him is seeing him in the context of Russian rulers of the past. He's losing the war, and that's good, but it will still be a long haul til it's over. His best option is to wait out the West. It might work. gardenofmemory.net/frozen-gian

Historian Oleksandr Polianchev (Stockholm) published a fascinating thread in late August about where Putin's notion of Ukraine as an "anti-Russia" as his justification for war came from. Polianchev identifies links to both the early post-Soviet and the late Imperial periods. The genocidal intention is also clear. 🧵 twitter.com/opolianichev/statu

@SocraticEthics I totally agree with and I would even say that many western countries are extremely naive with respect to and Russia. and are the lighting examples of behaving childish naive towards Putin. To end this and useless Russia has to be otherwise Russia will find somewhere in the near future another silly excuse to attack. Just dive in the and you will understand the real intentions of Russia.
