A Jewish boy strives to enter school in a system that is unfair to his people & culture, and succeeds regardless--only to have his family's livelihood destroyed by Cossacks in a pogrom. While in hiding from the violence, he falls in love with a sympathetic soldier's wife.
Writing that's comparable, at times, to master-paintings; so richly evocative.
