Makiivka is interesting me as I try to wade through propaganda on both sides. From footage I've seen, I think somewhere in the middle is probably accurate, but apologies for a bit of a ramble.

What we know (or what both sides admit). At, or close to midnight on New Year's Eve, Ukrainian troops shelled Vocational School number 19 in Makiivka. Some Russian troops were resting there. (TASS, Signal, Unian, Medusa have all reported this). TASS published video of the attack and claimed 15 casualties, later reports said "at least 15 dead". Local telegram reports from both sides suspect HIMARS.

Ukrainian telegram has published messages from residents claiming the death toll and injuries are much higher. There is footage of Russian corpses lying in the road that I'm not going to share on here. Unian (Ukrainian news) claims 600 dead and many wounded.

Unian also reports eyewitnesses saying that the school was targeted because either soldiers alerted the ZSU to their presence by firing guns to celebrate the New Year, or that the firing was the Russians were shooting at each other in confusion.

Who knows what really happened? Probably not even the soldiers involved. I don't trust the Russians to admit a huge number of casualties. On the other hand, 600 dead is probably overly optimistic by the Ukrainians. However, the complaints on DPR telegram about soldiers being stationed in such an unfortified building in such a concentration, suggests that the death toll is more than 15.

Viacheslav Volodin, a deputy in the Russian Duma, states that Ukraine will have to pay reparations for the restoration of Donbas. I say fine. Ukraine pays for what it damaged and Russia does the same. Reparations are a great idea Slava.

He also says that Ukrainians bear collective responsibility for Ukrainian "crimes". Where have we heard that before? Remind me, who are the Nazis again?

He then goes on to say, "Perhaps only the elimination of Ukrainian statehood will secure our country." and suggests supporting the "Forum of People's Deputies of Ukraine for Decolonization" set up by Ilya Kiva, an ex-Ukrainian MP accused of criminal activity. Who is the coloniser here? Ukraine has never colonised anywhere. Russia, on the other hand... it's Orwellian levels of propaganda.

This was all reported in RT without any acknowledgement of the canard.

A theater where hundreds of people had taken shelter in #Mariupol was bombed on Wednesday, according to local authorities, as hundreds of thousands of people remain trapped in the coastal Ukrainian city that has been encircled for weeks by #russianstatemedia forces.

Mariupol City Council, who shared an image of the destroyed building, said Russian forces had "purposefully and cynically destroyed the Drama Theater in the heart of Mariupol."
