had another go at doing some scanning as not scanned for ages - this time i scanned from within gimp - i have an epson 4490 scanner so am using the linux driver from epson - the driver made a pretty good job of auto exposing the selection so i just used gimp to rotate and crop the image, then export as a jpeg
