I watched #WheelOfFortuneAndFantasy last night. And between that, #DriveMyCar and other films, #ryusukehamaguchi is fast becoming one of my favorite #film directors. He has the keen insight for the human condition and how we can find a measure of grace and epiphany- not in a bombastic Hollywood way but something much closer to our daily truth. Not being hyperbolic but he’s in the same class as Chekhov, Joyce, Baldwin, and Woolf. #cinema #auteur

Asako I & II tackles on letting go of first love in a very unique way. #RyusukeHamaguchi has a great sensitivity dealing with delicate subject and make his actors shine. Erika Karata embodies depth & mystery of a young woman coming out of her shell w/out compromising her core self. Masa Higashide shines in dual roles w/ great empathy & maturity. It is refreshing to see a film that is modern & direct and not trying to be overtly Ozu or genre, yet still very Japanese. #japanesecinema

Not very literal takes on 'author's vision' but...

Loved Ryusuke Hamaguchi's film 'Drive My Car' (2022). It makes a short story by Haruki Murakami epic by mashing it up with 'Uncle Vanya' by Anton Chekhov.

Also loved the great themes Frank Darabont's 'Shawshank Redemption' (1994) found in a Stephen King short story.
