Last day of SHEAR! First session for me: "Black Thought in and beyond the Early Republic." Michael Dickinson (VCU) gave a close reading of Henry Box Brown's narrative, looking in particular at the silences in the book. Number of great insights as to the evidence of trauma and difficulty of family separation, and an investigation of what Brown does NOT say, people who go unnamed, etc.
