"But the way in which Spain's World Cup-winning women, their colleagues and union representatives have acted, and what they've already gained, might well be the single most important, impressive and impactful group action by footballers in the modern history of their sport.

To be clear: I'm talking all football, men's or women's." Graham Hunter

I admit that football doesn't interest me much. However, the victory of the Spanish team in the FIFA Women's World Cup has been an exciting experience, because of the importance it has had in the vindication of the importance of women in professional sport and, in general, in the defence of women's rights in Spain. No matter how much progress has been made, all rights are always under threat.

On this event, I really liked these comments (in Spanish) from Amnesty International Spain: "Lessons we have learned (or not) from the Women's World Cup".

1. First thing we haven't learned: to use language in a correct and inclusive way.

2. Second thing we haven't learned: that only yes is yes.

3. Third thing we haven't learned: to give the protagonists the limelight.

4. The things we have learnt: equality, diversity, respect.

I wrote a blog post summing up my research trip this summer in Pamplona where I was looking at booksellers, private library inventories, and literacy. I talk a bit more about what I learned in terms of how my documents work than the content (hopefully future blog posts will be about that!), but it was helpful to think through what I learned that wasn't just "what happened in 17th-century Navarre?"

Meanwhile in , the country has woken up to find the has produced an inconclusive result with neither Left nor Right really in a strong enough position to quickly form a Govt.

The good news: while gaining 33 seats, have 19 less seats than in 2019.

And while PP gained 47 seats from 2019's result, with the Vox losses, the Right overall cannot form a majority...

With none of the obvious alliances gaining enough seats, Spaniards now may wait a while for a new Govt. to emerge!

At last, it's publication day for the 'Minoritised Languages and Travel' special collection in the Modern Languages Open journal edited with an intro by yours truly -- and all available Open Access.

Allow me to share each paper in this thread as they get published one by one.

First up,
“Everything Remains the Same”: Julio Camba Travelling Spain
by David Miranda-Barreiro

Abstract
In the first decades of the twentieth century, the Madrid-based Galician journalist Julio Camba (1882–1962) acquired long-lasting fame as a travel writer thanks to his foreign chronicles published in the Spanish press and subsequently compiled in a series of volumes. [...] Drawing on studies on state nationalism (Billig 1995) and Spanish nationalism (Taibo 2014, Delgado 2014) this article examines not only Camba’s own views but the response from contemporary scholarship to his texts.

Another presumption in bites the dust! 💥🇪🇸

→ In the mega-site of Valencina (Seville, SW ), dated from the Copper Age, analyses to the remains of the most socially prominent person revealed that is a female (and not a man as previously thought). 🚺👑

→ This female is nicknamed “the Ivory Lady.”

→ Analysis of sexually dimorphic amelogenin peptides in tooth enamel. 🧪🦷

→ In the article check the burial (in a tholos) and its fantastic context and artifacts.

"EYE-TRACKING GLASSES SHOW VIEWERS OF BOSCH TRIPTYCH ARE DRAWN TO HELL" by Sam Jones.

"Despite its lush and lustful depictions of a prelapsarian world and the myriad temptations of the flesh, the most arresting part of Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights appears to be the final panel of the famous triptych, in which pleasure’s price is paid, excruciatingly and inventively, for all eternity.

According to new research commissioned by Madrid’s Prado museum, where Bosch’s masterpiece has hung for almost a century, visitors’ eyes are most drawn to the hell panel where sinning flesh is pierced, processed and punished."

"EXHUMATION OF CIVIL WAR DEAD FROM SPAIN’S VALLEY OF CUELGAMUROS BEGINS. Scientists aim to analyse remains of 128 people recovered from basilica where thousands were buried" by Sam Jones.

"Forensic scientists are beginning efforts to exhume the remains of 128 people from the huge basilica outside Madrid where 34,000 dead from both sides of the Spanish civil war were buried, and where the body of Gen Francisco Franco also lay for almost half a century.

The exhumations at the Valley of Cuelgamuros – known until last year as the Valley of the Fallen – come after the families of some of those interred there spent almost two decades fighting for their loved ones to receive a dignified burial".

"Across Europe, the far right is rising. That it seems normal is all the more terrifying" by Owen Jones.

"Then there’s Spain. For years after the financial crash, the country appeared to buck the trend of many European nations because of its lack of a rising far-right party. Leading lights in the leftwing Podemos party had an explanation: the mass indignados protests against austerity, which erupted in 2011, seemed to ensure that discontent was directed at powerful interests, rather than vulnerable groups such as migrants. But in the 2019 general election, the far-right Vox party – defined by its hostility to migrants and opposition to regional autonomy in Spain – came third, and in last weekend’s local elections exceeded expectations. A snap general election has been called for July, and Vox could soon be in government, the first time the Spanish far right would be in corridors of power since the fall of Franco".

"Self-censorship among teachers to face the reactionary wave in the classrooms: "There is a certain climate of fear"" by Laura Galaup (ElDiario.es; in Spanish).

"The entry of an ultra-conservative discourse in schools causes some teachers to fear the reactions of families to talks on feminist issues, LGTBI and sex education: "The ultra-right is beginning to participate in parents' associations"".

""There is a certain climate of fear about the reaction of families to certain activities," admits Alicia, a guidance counselor at a public high school in the southern part of the Community of Madrid. Among her colleagues, she says, there is some fear that classes on sexuality and LGTBI diversity are perceived among parents "as indoctrination or an ideological issue" and not as human rights issues"".
