Years ago I worked for a large healthcare organization where a sign posted above the OR entrance boldly stated “The best surgeons in the world enter through these doors.” It was an organization that worked to attract and retain the best and the brightest.

That is how I continue to feel about the members of the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management. (SABM.org). Members are thought leaders in healthcare.

I am dismayed. A recently published article in ‘Annals of Blood’ boldly bears this title: “Patient blood management—it is about transfusing blood appropriately.”
The global definition of PBM states in part: “…a patient-centered, systematic, evidence-based approach to improve patient outcomes by managing and preserving a patient’s own blood…
