@respros this strikes me as a policy that has failings mostly in communication, and an opposition that is simply leveraging it for opportunistic political gain.

Vast majority of vehicles / drivers are unaffected. And now scrappage & upgrade grants offered to most others too.

Key will be to show improvements in air quality from #ULEZ expansion. Would make scrapping it way more painful to sell to the masses: "to save money for a few, we'll make air quality worse for all!" #UKpolitics #sadiqkhan

#SadiqKhan has announced a further £ 50 million for the scrappage scheme. This will be funded from reserves - equivalent to finding loose change at the back of the sofa! Effectively the scheme will no longer be means tested - which should save a bit on administration and takes his approach closer to those of #clementattlee and #williambeveridge - both well known ultra-leftists! .

A good and politically astute move. Perhaps even belated given what happened in #Uxbridge.

Of course the internal politics of this within #labour are likely to remain fraught. It looks from press briefings that some people best described as #blair #ultras may have seized on arguments over #ulez extension, #ltns and #netzero as a golden opportunity to resume a #vendetta against specifically #edmiliband and #sadiqkhan that has gone already for the best part of twenty years and has at different times involved the support of the #murdochs and possibly even #berlusconi !

The other issue was the handling of the #ulez extension by the #labour campaign. Misinformation about the impact does not appear to have been challenged - with voters who would not have had to pay the charge being left with the impression that they would. The candidate called for postponement without it seems realising the revenue impact would be - this in a party that has come close to making a fetish of avoiding any unfunded commitment! And #sadiqkhan was asked not to visit!

The #india factor relates to a perception among some #hindus that #labour is unsympathetic to #india - this is something that the #conservatives have played on since at least 2016 when they actually suggested #SadiqKhan would strip #hindu women of their golden ornaments in order to fund #labour policies in #london !

This has to be surely the time for #sadiqkhan to dig in and "hold the line" until the court case on the extension of #ulez next month and, assuming the challenge fails, the extension actually going ahead on 29 August. The alternative would have to be massive budget cuts - something somehow not mentioned by his critics. I wonder why that might be ! I seem to recall that #labour still sing a song which includes the phrase "cowards flinch"!
