Compromise Compromise Compromise:
So, the new #SafeguardMechanism v2.0 is on the table. Compromise from almost all sides. No hard cap on pollution, reduced obligations on certain companies. An upper price cap (which will end up costing the taxpayer or become a "pseudo" subsidy). Complex and unwieldy. Hopefully a start which can only improve.

To borrow from Megan Evans: "Don't let the bare minimum be the enemy of the grossly inadequate."

The Australian government's can-kicking climate philosophy has captured business, media and climate wonks. Those repeating the IPCC get dismissed as reckless and foolhardy.

"Easily the biggest point in the report echoes a point stated by the International Energy Agency in early 2021: in a world where we’re trying as hard as possible, we stop building new fossil fuel infrastructure at the same time as massively reducing demand for fossil fuels.

“Estimates of future CO2 emissions from existing fossil fuel infrastructures without additional abatement already exceed the remaining carbon budget for limiting warming to 1.5°C (50%)”, write the IPCC. “Projected cumulative future CO2 emissions over the lifetime of existing and planned fossil fuel infrastructure, if historical operating patterns are maintained and 12 without additional abatement, are approximately equal to the remaining carbon budget for limiting warming to 2°C with a likelihood of 83%”."

The Australian Government 's #SafeguardMechanism is meant to be a lever to limit polluting by big polluters. Instead, it is a permit to continue business as usual, or worse. Opening the avenue to unlimited #offsetting, putting a price cap on polluting, starting with sky high baselines, free credits and other flaws. Even the term safeguard is a misnomer when it comes to how the mechanism should be used (to decrease polluting).
