You'd think after nearly a decade following a project in depth every day, that there wouldn't be much left to learn but 🤦♂️
TIL 1: the big flaw of #blockchain and its derivatives is consensus. It was seen as essential but is its Achilles' heel because having every node in agreement comes at great cost (energy, computation, throttling, centralisation).
TL 2: you can create a #p2p robust economic system without consensus.
That's #DavidIrvine's biggest innovation in #SafeNetwork.

@johnleonard nice article John 👏
I suspect projects don't mention cryptocurrency or tokens because so many people have a knee jerk reaction to them. I see it all the time when they read a bit about Safe Network and lump it in with everything they hate about the last few years. 🤷♂️
But as you point out, a non blockchain token or some other means to incentivise providers will be essential for a truly #p2p alternative to centralised cloud and app services.
At least #SafeNetwork kept clean of VCs
@f17f9f6ff8e3a5ef95bbd20958678b0218df25d253a3485f756d8755e6208ead do you know about #SafeNetwork?
Test networks are running now specifically on the past where users pay to store and resource providers get paid, using a network token that is exchanged using Digital Bearer Certificates, validated by the network.
Fully #p2p, just simple nodes that run on anything, and a client app that talks to them.
@compsci_discussions @safenetwork @VeilidNetwork Also Veilid claims not being linked to any "coin" as an advantage, but if writing to the net is free-as-in-beer* how do you prevent the network being clogged up with spammy junk?
(* Where do I find all this free beer I keep hearing about anyway?)

@compsci_discussions Veilid sounds really impressive, but how much of this actually exists? How does it compare to #safenetwork, which is in the same space but has actually been running limited trials for some time now?

@pleiades @torproject Soulseek was new on me. It deserves credit for longevity although I think there are probably more small projects I've not heard of because I don't go actively looking. It is limited though and seems vulnerable in various ways, and as noted has not scaled in functionality or adoption.
My favourite is running test networks to finalise parts of the implementation and get ready to launch: #SafeNetwork
Fully autonomous, secure, privacy focussed, #p2p file storage/app platform.
Well if it all goes pear 🍐 I blame ⬆️ you lot, all three of you because I have just published an update to #vdash for use with ThePriceIsRightNet (the current #SafeNetwork #testnet).
See https://safenetforum.org/t/vdash-node-dashboard-for-safe-network/32630/92?u=happybeing
@fak3r Thanks, I was just curious but someone replied that every Veilid app is a node, so all nodes are equivalent.
Personally I am running nodes for testing another p2p project. If that might be of interest, click the hashtag to find the current testnet which started yesterday: #SafeNetwork
It's much easier than hosting a server. A simple install and a cli command for the node. I'm just running cloud nodes until they enable operation behind NAT (home routers). Nodes are very lightweight.
@mishamouse
I don't claim it's smart but I do the same.
I've set up a magazine so there's an alternative to the subreddit which I used to moderate.
I didn't use reddit much though and probably won't use Kbin, except to post and boost announcements for #SafeNetwork
I have begun to use @codidact (similar to #StackExchange) so also have an account there to post and comment.
Like you I think I'm probably doing it wrong to some extent although to post on any of them you will need an account.
Things are happening in decentralised internet land.
Anyone can run multiple nodes on a single device as part of an autonomous network, which means no gatekeepers, surveillance or censorship.
With a simple client app you can:
- store and retrieve files
- send and receive offline payments using Digital Bearer Certificates which can be validated by the #decentralized network.
That's #decentralised digital cash without a blockchain, which means very fast & energy efficient.

@technikhil @musicmatze I was also going to mention libp2p along with #SafeNetwork (github.com/maidsafe/safe_network) which is written in Rust and implements something which sounds very like your description and uses libp2p.
@akkartik @citc you also need apps that you control.
Both can be solved or helped by #decentralization, a peer-to-peer storage and communication network:
- just you and the network
- you control access to your data
- avoids lock in
This is hard but achievable.
#decentralization #safenetwork #p2p
@bblfish @sflc Self hosting even with all the excellent work out into #FreedomBox will always be harder than signing up to a service.
I believe #p2p can be easier than both, so that's another area to push forward.
And there's no reason why a useful portion of the #SolidProtocol and Solid apps can't be a part of that, because I have already demonstrated the feasibility on a #SafeNetwork test net.
#freedombox #p2p #SolidProtocol #safenetwork
@privacyint I've long realised that while I very much support your work, and others highlighting and pushing back on these issues, it will never be enough.
We also need to make it hard for governments and corporations to violate privacy, by building alternative technology that is fundamentally secure and not vulnerable to government dictat.
So I support secure autonomous #p2p solutions, with no gatekeepers so we can have

#SafeNetwork is in testing.
Another week and eleven more (+50%) subscribers to the Safe Network Kbin magazine 🥳 (a #Reddit replacement).
You can follow directly from Mastodon or other fedi, no need for a #Kbin account.

@breakfastmtn Check out #SafeNetwork which is currently running test networks.
It isn't just a chat/social platform but a secure autonomous platform on which these and many other apps can be built without gatekeepers or conventional servers.
So no admins and anyone can create or run an app (no need to self host).
@paul Hi Paul, after a quick look at your profile and blog I realise you may already know about it, but just in case, I think you would be interested in #SafeNetwork
@mikey single sign-on will be a feature of #SafeNetwork, a fully #p2p app platform.
So dream away 😃

I avoid apps because they syphon data from your phone and sell it, but I regularly used and paid for @redditwasfun which is now dead thanks to capitalism.
Uninstalling... #Reddit and have replaced with #kbin.
Was a moderator on Reddit since 2014 but won't contribute there again and will do my best to never put my content on another commercial platform, nor read/share their links.
I host my dWeb blog and have four fedi personas, but what I'm waiting for is #SafeNetwork cos servers suck. #p2p
