#Tesla's self-driving software is buggy and Dan O'Dowd of #Greenhills Software is arguing, with good evidence, that it's irresponsible to debug super complex safety critical software by pushing it into wide distribution. However, Greenhills software is not the panacea O'Dowd claims it is. It is reliable, but it requires a large amount of less reliable software to work with it to do anything useful.

I really think that there needs to be some sort of reckoning or introspection in the #AI and #MachineLearning space around the topic of #SafetyCritical systems.
There was often praise heaped upon Tesla's development approach, post "AI Day", by prominent researchers and members of the Machine Learning community - without any regard or conversations around systems safety *at all*!
We are dealing with direct impacts to life and limb here. We have an ethical responsibility to the public.

If Musk *was* competent in #SafetyCritical systems (which he is not), then he would recognize that physical, controlled and exhaustive validation is not practical across an operational domain that is unknown to you at any given time.
Instead, Musk and Tesla myopically looks at this as purely an #AI problem and a software problem... which are, in fact, mere components of the larger constellation of interacting safety-critical systems (on the vehicle and outside of the vehicle).
So, apparently Musk also stated this on a #Tesla earnings call last night:
"I was with the Autopilot/Full Self-Driving team late last night... and asked who is close to developing a general solution to self-driving, and we couldn't even pick someone for second place. You can't see second place with a telescope. At least we can't."
This statement by Musk is unsurprising, but it reminds me that I have to a fuller breakdown why a "general solution" cannot exist in #SafetyCritical systems.
I like this blog post - very much so.
And I think that as capital-constrained (possibly competence-constrained) startups have increasingly entered the #SafetyCritical systems space... this "philosophy", which is nothing new, was lost.
We are also in a uniquely dangerous time in the automotive industry.
We have #Tesla making a flat-out mockery of the #NHTSA and the #SafetyCritical systems industry more broadly - and pocketing the outsized proceeds of their wrongdoings.
It is just a matter of time before the whole automotive industry follows right along with that.

“The intent of the video was not to accurately portray what was available for customers in 2016. It was to portray what was possible to build into the system,” Elluswamy [#Tesla Head of Autopilot Software] said.
There is so much wrong with this statement and it demonstrates a complete lack of competency in #SafetyCritical systems development and Human Factors safety issues.

Time for another #SystemsSafety Monday!
#OTA (Over-The-Air) software updates and remote #telemetry mechanisms for #SafetyCritical systems are an under-appreciated public safety hazard when unregulated - as they are today.
Some automakers already have these mechanisms available on existing vehicles and many more equipped vehicles are now coming to market.
Very soon, these mechanisms will be commonplace.

CRIM2022 at The University of Oulu starts I'm about 3 hours (currently sitting waiting for the plane to Oulu at Helsinki... Yes, I need coffee)
3 days of lectures on #cybersecurity, #digiralforensics and #safetycritical systems from industrial experts in the field - all neatly packaged as a MSc module.
This will be my 7ty or 8th year lecturing. Tutorial on the basics of TPM and remote attestation on Wednesday plus a lecture on firmware security in the morning.
Great workshop to come!
Tutorial materials are at Nokia's public GitHub under TPMCourse. Feel free to contribute and help educate the next generation of cybersec students.
Ps: raining heavily, early morning and airport priced coffee....
