Now everybody has got talking about #webenvironmentintegrity (1)I've started looking at other Google initiatives to lock down user freedom.

Spoiler alert: #google do a lot of it.

#safetynet (2)is required by many #android apps and severely restricts the freedom of users outside of Google's approved ROMs, causing many apps to not work without a suite of Google dependencies.

Google Play Services (3) are another example of Google taking something that could have been free and shutting us out

So a potentially more immediately relevant question for any #law folks out there would be whether the current instantiation of #SafetyNet is in violation of article 22. Not being able to use Pokemon Go on my custom phone is one thing, but if my bank's app refused to load I could see a potential cause for action.

I'm really having difficulty viewing this as anything other than an attempt to deprive users of control of their own devices. It's an extension of the project #Google began with #SafetyNet, and with #Qualcomm's #SecureWorld hardware would give manufacturers complete control over what the device that you "own" can do.
