You can opt out of emergency alerts, but the government advises you should keep them switched on for your own safety.

To opt out:

Search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’.
Turn off ‘severe alerts’ and ‘extreme alerts’.
If you still get alerts, contact your device manufacturer for help.

Mobile phone masts in the surrounding area will broadcast an alert. Every compatible mobile phone or tablet in range of a mast will receive the alert.

Your mobile phone or tablet does not have to be connected to mobile data or wifi to get alerts.

The alert will say:

“This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a new UK government service that will warn you if there’s a life-threatening emergency nearby.

In an actual emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.

Visit gov.uk/alerts for more information.

This is a test. You do not need to take any action.”

A good place to start is by making a Safety Plan – the mental health equivalent of putting on a seatbelt. It reminds people what they can do to help themselves + sources of support if they become distressed. See StayingSafe.net for ideas

@AlysColeKing Thank you for your post. I deal with self harm since my youth, and have experience with suicidal ideations. No attention seeking, I rather hide it from most people. I know the feeling of utter despair and not wanting to live like THIS, but wanting to LIVE, just not knowing how and where to take the strength from. With professional help, I created a sort of emergency kit for my darker times, and will be adding the that I got from the website.

Imagine if health and social care profs were compassionate and believed people in suicidal crisis
-if practitioners had enough capacity, training and competences so they could ask about suicide and respond with confidence
-if they always listened, validated, shared authentic hope, mitigated risks, and coproduced SafetyPlans to help people build lives worth living
