Am 2. September 1192, heute vor 830 Jahren, endete mit dem Vertrag von Ramla der Dritte Kreuzzug.

Der Ayyubiden-Sultan Saladin und der englische König Richard Löwenherz schlossen in Ramla (im heutigen Israel) einen Vertrag, in dem ein dreijähriger Waffenstillstand und ein Teilrückzug der Kreuzfahrer aus Palästina vereinbart wurde.

Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, a heroic figure from Muslim history. A warrior, conqueror, king, philosopher, scholar and general. A man of incredible wisdom and compassion, who demonstrated that victory on the battlefield need not require the abandonment of honour or mercy. Am 29. Oktober 1187, heute vor 835 Jahren, rief Papst Gregor VIII. zum Dritten Kreuzzug auf.

Der Aufruf war Teil der Bulle „Audita tremendi“ und richtete sich an die europäischen Herrscher. Er reagierte damit auf die Eroberung Jerusalems durch Saladin drei Wochen zuvor. Im März 1188 erklärte der römisch-deutsche Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossa seine Teilnahme am Kreuzzug.
