If you're in during the 19th anniversary of First Friday Artwalk (Sept. 1), stop by and say hello at our book reception and reading of short essays by folks who grew up and/or worked in Salinas . It's free. Snacks and music. Also, Arts Council of County will be opening a new cooperative art studio just down the street from our reading (they funded our book). Lots going on this Friday in Salinas, mostly along Main St.

The 2023 Monterey County Bike Map has been completed and is now available online in 8-1/2 x 11 PDF formats. In addition, new Z-fold maps are anticipated to be available for distribution by August 2023.

The last edition was in 2016, so the new map is a cause of celebration for visitors and residents of .

Festival is happening at the [Japanese] Buddhist Temple of today. 12 noon to 5pm. San Jose will be performing, along with martial arts demos, bonsai, lots of food, games, a raffle, and respect for the ancestors.

The Philippines Mail, published in Salinas Chinatown, (mentioned in previous post), reported on a vigilante attack on the Canete Labor camp in , 1934. The Filipinos were striking for higher wages.

Delfin Cruz (top left) with family and friends. Cruz edited the longest-running in the U.S., published out of from 1934-1983. It was printed with the help of a (then) progressive printer for the Carmel Pine Cone. The newspaper was pro-labor and covered the violent Salinas lettuce strikes of the 1930s.
