Have you visited 765 year-old Salisbury Cathedral? Seat of the Anglican bishops of Salisbury, it’s not only historic and lovely but also has several distinctions. It’s spire (1320) is the highest church spire in England, it boasts the largest cloister and the largest cathedral close in Britain at 80 acres (32 ha), it contains a clock which is among the oldest working examples in the world, and it has one of the four surviving original copies of Magna Carta.

#April in the cloister of #SalisburyCathedral. In a monastery, the cloister was the hub that connected the church to the convent’s working buildings: the chapter house, refectory, dormitory, treasury etc. Unlike Durham or Ely Cathedrals, Salisbury was never monastic, being a secular Cathedral of the Old Foundation. Nevertheless the canons needed a chapter house to hold their deliberations, and their cloister also offered walkways for study, exercise and reflection.

Monday’s #ImageOfTheDay: the tower & spire of #SalisburyCathedral. Today the Church remembers the priest-poet #GeorgeHerbert (1593-1633), rector of nearby Bemerton. He would often walk to Evensong in the Cathedral & linger afterwards to make music with the musicians there.
