SF has always been a drinking town and has ALWAYS been known to have a lot of bars, more than anywhere else in the country as is indicated by this article:

Here's a list of 10 of the oldest bars in SF going back to 1851:

Don't know how long it's been there but there's always been a bar at the southest corner of Broadway & Polk (now called "Shanghai Kelly's") on the block where I lived in the 50's-70's.
However, my favorite old bar in SF is "Li Po" on Grant near Washington, where I was sometimes sent to find an uncle (who was absent from a family event), which also has been there for as long as I can remember.
I’ve been absolutely fascinated by Carl #Worner and his dioramas in bottles since I saw someone had found one, unattributed and filthy, at the back of a thrift shop. They’re fabulous! Whole worlds, often #bars or #saloons, in a bottle - often with a hidden man (usually on the loo, apparently). Little is known about him other than he was a German immigrant to the US in the late 1800’s who ‘lived and traveled extensively though New England’ #art #folkArt #diorama #whimsy https://www.folkartinbottles.com/artists/artists-s-z/57-carl-worner
