You can do it with #Docker and my custom image, which has some nice features like #GitFS and #GPG encryption out of the box. It includes secrets for handling your private keys, as well as #SaltAPI support:

@cepharum auf kolektiva.social hab ich 10.000 Zeichen 😎 Sehe oft Leute die längeren Postings machen, scheint nicht nur dort der Fall zu sein. Gibt bestimmt einen Schalter. Ich glaube nicht, dass die jedes Mal den Code anpassen, und wenn, man hat doch #ansible oder #saltstack oder macht ihr sowas noch händisch? Ich fühl’ mich irgendwie abgecancelt, nicht ernst genommen. Ich werde das selbst checken. Schade, schade, dachte das wäre cool hier.

Wir machen uns einen saltstack und rotzen das, wenn es geht, auf irgendeinen Server. Wir haben nur null Mastodon Erfahrung, wie gut das zu updaten geht.

Aber das automatisieren wir im Idealfall alles weg, mit irgendeinem Orchestrierungstool. Wir haben #BigBlueButton Cluster verwaltet, hunderte Instanzen, das geht schon.

@maop @jessikatme ahora que instalé la de escritorio y reinstalé la lap las tengo operadas por #saltstack y las configuraciones imoprtantes más bien las hago ahí y las aplico en vez de en las computadoras individualmente.

Así instalar una en caso de formateo no es particularmente doloroso, pero requiere un poco de disciplina.

After trying out #nixos over weekend I am really impressed by this "different world" distro as I call it and I can recommend to try it out. But it does not suit my current (stack|strategy) which is immutable_distro+containers+flatpak. I love containers. I also missed few typical orchestrator-like features in nix. I decided to stay on #Fedora #Kinoite (and Rocky, Centos, ....) and use orchestrator.

Usecase: private linux devices with VPN and few VPS.

On a particular #rockylinux machine (others seem fine), #saltstack has trouble enabling a service:

"The named service systemd-timesyncd is not available"

Trouble is: after I typed "systemctl enable systemd-timesyncd", the salt state (service.enabled) works forever (re-enabling ok). If I mask the service, the error is different.

Could it be an implicit "daemon-reload" when typing or something fishy like this?

Can a RasPi3 sitting on my desk with 1GB RAM with Tailscale + Syncthing + Salt manage a small fleet of personal machines - baremetal and VMs, over a 4G connection?

Seems to work with 4 "minions" with minimal configuration so far.

Para este cliente no puedo cambiar la infraestructura, pero aún dentro de DO sé que un droplet con un Gb más de memoria me costaría 10 dólares al mes menos (24 usd)

pero si tuviera total libertad lo movería a #Netcup , donde tener más del doble de memoria costaría una tercera parte del precio.

Y los despliegues automáticos los tengo automatizados con #saltstack

Yeah, the "problem" for us is, we use #FAI for the bare metal installation while #SaltStack only kicks in after the initial reboot where I rather want to have most stuff already configured (network wise). Plus, I would need to interface the module with netbox regardless, so not that much different I fear.

(I already fear 3006's onedir installation which will nicely collide with our networked /opt directory, but that's a story for another day)
