"The health care we got at the University of Alabama was the help we needed. I think she came out in November, and we got our first appointment in May. So there were about six months where we were stumbling around trying to find people. We live in the middle of the woods in Alabama. And when we went there, they made us immediately feel like, You’re not the only ones. We know a lot of folks like you. We’re going to take it slow. They were just so caring. They gave Jess and me a chance to express ourselves. And then they gave us options and told us what they would not do. There’s not going to be surgeries, there’s not going to be medications or prescriptions right off. We’re gonna find out who you are, you’re gonna find out who we are. And then we’ll go from there. It may have been the one-year mark when she got something very light, a hormone [puberty] blocker, like a half dose. Just to see, moving slow, is this what she really wants. When we got to the point where they were saying, Next visit we’re talking about medications, then boy, everything changed."

"Attorneys for the city filed their motion to dismiss Locke’s family’s suit on Thursday, ahead of a pretrial conference next week—and just one day before the Justice Department released a blistering report about widespread racism and brutality by the Minneapolis Police Department. The Justice Department also announced that the city would negotiate a federal consent decree to reform policing. 'This work is foundational to the very health of our city,' Mayor Jacob Frey told reporters about the consent decree. 'We have the power here to effect lasting change, to effect generational change, and we embrace that.'"

"On Friday, the department released a blistering report showing that for years, the Minneapolis police have discriminated against Native Americans as well as Black residents, creating the conditions that led to Floyd’s death. The police are much more likely to stop and search people from both minority groups, the feds found, and to use force against them—especially in certain neighborhoods: In the Third Precinct, where many Native Americans live, the cops used force 69 percent more often during stops with Native Americans than in similar stops with white people from 2020 to 2022. They were 49 percent more likely to use force against Black people in the area."
