"Sample size samba" (Schulz and Grimes 2005) is a glorious way of describing whatever the hell is going on with some papers.

My latest post - OC Curve and Reliability/Confidence Sample Sizes:

I have had a lot of feedback on one of my earlier posts on OC curves and how one can use it to generate a reliability/confidence statement based on sample size, n and rejects, c. This post is mostly geared towards giving an overview of using OC curves to generate reliability/confidence values and using Minitab to do the same.

Can anyone point me to a paper/post explaining why you should not base your sample size calculation on the effect found in the literature or a pre-test? Pretty sure I read it once but cannot find it anymore. Maybe I saw it in @lakens's course?

This looks fascinating:

“We reviewed empirically-based studies of sample sizes for saturation in qualitative research.

We confirmed qualitative studies can reach saturation at relatively small sample sizes.

Results show 9–17 interviews or 4–8 focus group discussions reached saturation.”

(Interested in) Working with the random-intercept Cross-lagged Panel Model and unsure what sample size to use?

Jeroen Mulder fixed it for you:
Mulder, J.D., (2022). Power analysis for the random intercept cross-lagged panel model using the powRICLPM R-package. Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal.

@teixi @neuroscience @sTeamTraen I don't object to the BFI-2 being used in neuroscience, or psychology more generally. There's a good body of validation research on it. But a good BFI-2 study typically has several hundred--possibly 1000--participants.

I'm trying to get into neuroscience now, but it's hard to cut through the brain picture hype to know what you should believe.

@neuroscience What concerns me is this:

fMRI: N = 66
EEG: N = 225

It just feels too small to do anything sophisticated and/or reliable.

I just reviewed a publication in the last year or so that found you need *way more* brains than that for valid trait inferences.

Here's what I wrote about it:

Trying to find a paper from a couple of years ago about studies being improved (not sure that was the word) when the sample size (and Power) is considered and justified in the ethics application. Ring any bells for anyone? I am currently drawing a blank but sure I read it.
