If this book can claim this, my next book on Cicero will be called: 'Cicero: the first man to ever give a speech'

Editing and boosting this because there's some great replies and Mastodon don't do quote tweets.

So glad to have discovered your account. A wonderful project.

As a student in my little college room I always had one of the fat green/blue volumes of the Latham/Matthews edition by my bedsite. Needless to say, my fellow students made liberal use of the word "pretentious" (about me, not Pepys).

Absolutely adore those laconic entries.

Such a lovely project, thank you!

An insight from Samuel Pepys' diary entry on this day in 1663 into the fear of ‘minor’ illness. We forget that such illnesses, easily remedied today, could become life threatening in the 17th Century.

@Thebestisyettocome There's a bot that live tweets the diary. It concluded the diary earlier this year, and will start again in January with the first entry of the diary.

An insight on this day in 1663 as to the jealousy Samuel Pepys felt for his colleague in Naval Administration, Sir William Batten. A jealousy borne by the thought that Batten, as landed gentry would always be seen as Pepys’, ‘better’ irrespective of their relative capabilities.

On this day in 1663 Samuel Pepys describes the ridicule of Charles II by Britain’s then perennial enemy the Dutch. 25 years later British powers would invite Mary, Charles' niece, to reign with her Dutch husband William of Orange

A bit niche … but worth a try. I am reading the complete diaries of Samuel Pepys - one day at a time. My reading is exactly 360 years behind his writing. (The entry for this day in 1662 is representative: the Royal Navy, Charles II, disputes over money and a will, and the long-suffering Mrs Pepys.) Is anyone else out there involved in any similar marathon reading? Only 7 years to go …
