Today is the anniversary of the , in 1864, when hundreds of Cheyenne, mostly women & children, were shot & hacked to pieces by U.S. Colonel John Chivington & 700 of his men who invaded the village under cover of night.

The Cheyenne were camped under a flag of peace.

U.S. Captain Silas Soule & Lieutenant Joseph Cramer refused to participate in the act of genocide & ordered their men to stand down. In a letter to his mother, Soule wrote that +300 Cheyenne were massacred that day & that “most of them were women and children.”

Soule’s account in a separate letter to an army major reveals just how grisly the massacre was. “Hundreds of women and children were coming towards us, and getting on their knees for mercy,” only to be shot and “have their brains beat out by men professing to be civilized.”

Abraham Lincoln was, of course, President.

H/t Ruth Robertson.

Today marks 158 years since the Sand Creek Massacre, where 100's of peaceful Arapaho & Cheyenne ppl were killed by US army soldiers on the eastern plains.

This is still living history. Still impacting life in CO today.

For instance, because of this deadliest day in Colorado's history, we will all soon have a new name for one of CO's most iconic 14'ers (probably). Goodbye Mt Evans. Hello Mt. Blue Sky!

Another well done article on the exhibit at . I was fortunate to benefit from these tribal consultations while creating interpretive signage for Historic Site, located about 80 miles from the massacre and tied to it through land reparations. History Colorado and the Tribes developed a way of recounting history that should become the standard.

Great article by CPR on the new Sand Creek Massacre exhibit at History Colorado. After botching the first exhibit, HC has spent 10 years trying to get it right, and from reports of those attending this morning, they have done so. Loads of gratitude to the Northern Cheyenne, Northern Arapaho, and Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes for their dedication to getting their history told.
